Bye bye, Linux
 

After spending (wasting) the last two days trying to get nvidia drivers installed under Mandrake9.1, enough is enough. If something takes 10x longer to do in Linux than Windoze, what's the point?

Right now I'm fixing my MBR, going to delete my LInux partitions, and throw away all my Linux disks to avoid the temptation of going back. I simply don't have the time nor patience and benefits of Linux right now are escaping me....

Please don't give up! :( :cry: :(

It is really worth your time in the long run. It really is! By using Linux you really learn an awful lot about your system/hardware and operating. So many excellent utilities and programs support it.

Try it one more time: Try redhat 9. List your hardware. 99.9% of the help you need is here! :)

I have a geforce 2 on one PC and a geForce Go 2 on the other. Both have RH9 and both use the Nvidia drivers.

Successful install of Nvidia Linux Drivers (1.0-4349) on Dell Laptop with RH 8.1

My system:
RedHat 8.1 (Kernel 2.4.18-14) with xfree86 version 4.2.0
P4 1.8Ghz Dell Inspiron 8250 Laptop
Intel 845 ("Brookdale") AGP chipset
1024x768 15" LCD
GeForce 2 GO (32Mb)
384Mb
30Gb
Previously used standard VESA display 1024x768
Haven't changed from the Default BlueCurve scheme.

I installed the latest NVIDIA Accelerated Linux Drivers (1.0-4349) and it worked. I read a lot of people
were having grief with these so this is exactly what I did and it wasn't much at all! Followed the Readme
on the site beside the file. Good documentation.

Total Time involved... less than 10 mins.

1) Got the NVIDIA Accelerated Linux Driver 1.0-4349 (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4349.run) from www.nvidia.com
2) Set the runlevel to 3 in the /etc/inittab file.
3) Checked I had 4.0.1 of XFree86 installed. I had. RedHat 8.1 comes with 4.2.0 apparently (looking at
/var/log/XFree86.0.log). The Readme suggests you need at least 4.0.1. I stuck with 4.2.0. There is a 4.3.0 version now available. (RH9 now has 4.3.0 anyway).
4) ran sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4349.run. The installer does everything...
5) next edit /etc/X11/XF86Config to change "nv" to "nvidia" etc as in the readme.
6) startx

Came back onto the desk after a quick Nvidia logo display. Tried out the GL screensavers. Very nice. No slowdown of 2D operations either. Thank God for that.

Will need to run the .run installer again if kernel is updated.

Geez...if you don't want to tinker or find a solution...that's fine with me. Acid's right...most times its just about paying attention (and I'd like to add, using Google a lot :D )

I also have Geforce 2 and installed my nvidia drivers without a hitch...

if thats your best... then how do you accomplish anything.... the problems you are encountering is REALLY very very easy to solve.....

oh well, its really sad when i see someone give up... your always welcome back though if you decide to give Linux another go...

You can remove lilo from the mbr with
/sbin/lilo -u
You can remove grub or lilo from the mbr by booting with a Windows 98 boot floppy (at the prompt, type fdisk /mbr), or by using the Windows XP Recovery Console or the Windows 2000 Recovery Console

Don't forget, cheap Linux CDs are all over.

Try SuSE next time will ya! Buy the box, it comes with DVD/CDs, manuals, support, and other goodies too. At least if you buy it you wouldn't give up easily, think about the money you just spent ;-)

I don't think he will give up. Just needs a rest. There's only so much a person can take in at once. He'll be back in a month or two.
