Browser cannot load Apache index.html

I have just installed a WebProxy server software and Apache2 on a Fedora Core 6 machine. The Proxy server will authenticate individuals that click on a link to an onliine database and if authenticated, will forward them to the database. I have the links to these databases on the default index.html file within Apache2. Everything works correctly when I use FireFox;however, when I try to access my default index.html Web Server Page with IE, it doesn't come up.

This is what I have on my Web Server/Proxy Server:

An index.html page within my /usr/local/apache2/htdocs directory. This page contains links to online databases that have to go through my Proxy Server. I do not have a registered domain name for this web/proxy server because at this point it is just for testing purposes. I reference to this server with the IP 10.3.0.99. I am accessing it from within the same private network 10.3.0.X, so no name resolution is needed.

When I enter 10.3.0.99 within FireFox, I get the index.html page with no problem. When I do the same for IE, I get nothing....not even an error message.

Interestingly enough, when I open IE and enter http://10.3.0.99:2048/login, which is the authentication screen for the proxy server to forward authorized people to the online database, it comes up with no problem. I can enter a username and password, and then it forwards me to a menu screen of links. It just looks like I have an issue with IE opening up the default index.html page within apache2.

I have tried different versions of IE, both IE7 and earlier versions.

Does anyone know what troubleshooting steps I need to take to resolve this?

With this information? Don't use IE.

When you say it doesn't display anything - did you try to
look at the source of the page you tried to access within IE?

And questions about a windows browser not rendering a page
aren't really a Linux-question; moved to General.

Cheers,
Tink

Since this is potentially going to be a public Web Server, I cannot guarentee that all library patrons are going to be using FireFox to access it. I feel like I have to test it with alternate Web browsers to make sure it is accessible.

Per your advice, I tried viewing the source and yes, I can see the html code for the page. It is just that IE will not display the actual Web page.

I apologize for the misplacement of my query. I hypothisized that this might have been an issue with a configuration setting with apache. So I figured it is a Linux software question. My mistake.

It *may* well be an issue with your HTML. Have you run it
against http://validator.w3.org/ ?

Found it!

There was an ever so subtle syntax error in my html coding. I was mislead by the fact that FireFox disregarded the error and seemed to know my intention, making me believe that the code was fine and it was an IE or apache issue.

Anyway, thanks for the help.

An option is to change the Document Rootpath in httpd.conf from "/usr/local/apache2/htdocs" to where you have your new index file "/var/www/html."

Let me know if this works.
