Blue-Ray Vs HD-DVD

Hi guy just wondering which high definition disk format you support and want to see win the battle of the HD disk

Sony = Blu-Ray
Microsoft = HD-DVD

puntjuh 02-07-2007 04:10 PM

My bet is that Blu-Ray will win this in the end, and i think most of this is thanks to playstation 3 having a blu-ray player.

Don't be so sure. I can ONLY hope, that blue ray wins. Why? Becouse there are enough stupid a noob people to think like this: "Ooo... HDTV, wow! We will need a HD-DVD player for this..." I think you understand what do I mean. So I can only say again, that I only can hope that Blue-ray wins. The other thing is, that this debute latency in europe and the small amount of PS3 games does not make a good point for Blu-ray. We'll see the results soon, or if not results, but tendencies.

I am not really bothered about the PS3, but I prefer Blu-Ray. From what I have read, Blu-Ray is better than HD-DVD and has higher capacity although the discs are a bit more expensive.

wasnt betamax a better format? everyone saw what happened there. I think blue-ray will last longer , but only if this fox copy protection is worth the disk its burnt on. In the end the decison isnt with the users, but with the distributer. If you can only buy films in one format then thats all you'll buy.

What i dont understand is why no ones working on a player that can play both?

I believe such players are already on the market or being worked on. I am sure I read somewhere that LG or some other company has a player out there that can play both formats.

There have been plans for Hybrid players, but untill now, Sony and Toshiba have allways threathened companies that we're planning on creating them.

And yes.. Betamax was better then the VHS - system.. But your average consumer don't care about technology and such, so they just buy what's cheap and what they think have the best movies on it.

And by the way people.. it's BLU-RAY .. not BLUE-RAY !

You know, it is not sure that the better format will win. This is bad. There were a lot of cases, where the worse format was used, when there was a much better. Here is a very clear example: the 1,44" floppy discs. There were numerous formats that could've replace it, becouse they were better, but neighter of them did. These formats could've been the Data Minidisc, ZIP-drive, etc... Another case: The ordinary tape (casette) for music could've been replaced by Minidisc, but it didn't. Instead people waited for years, until the first CD-writers came, but MD was always writable. People are driven by their feelings and habits, but not by racional thoughts. Just look at cars. Car factories spend millions and millions of dollars to improve their Otto-engine (which is not effective by its nature), just to have a 0,01 percent better performance. There are much better solutions today, like Wankel engine, turbine-electric hybrids, Hidrogen cell powered electric cars, etc., but they are not used as commonly as they should be. Why? Becouse there are always interests, that prevent better technology to become common. I think this HD-DVD - Blue ray war is not a different story. If behind HD-DVD are more interests, and more money (microsoft), than it will win this battle. People don't learn from their mistakes... History always repeats itself. -> too bad.

Oh, I forget to write in the previous reply: Just look at Sony. They had numerous good ideas and they introduced a lot of new things (minidisc, cd-text, playstation, betamax, memory stick, discman and CD itself with Philips, Blue-ray and many other things), but not all of them won a battle with another format, even if they were better than the others. So, we absolutaly cannot be sure if blue-ray wins or not.

Indiestory 02-08-2007 01:52 PM

yeah thats the way i see it, the masses will follow the one taken up by business and the people who distribute these media there really is no question about it. I see it that if blu-ray manages to have a strong security( yes drm) system then business will want to use it, because dont they just love money.

Couple of years, maybe less players will be advertised as supporting both as if its nothing just a thing has to happen, well if both survive.

exvor 02-08-2007 02:03 PM

EDIT: Never mind Blue ray is the 20 gig one i was talking about .
I will say this tho Microsoft is not the founder of HD-DVD nor even officially sided with that

Quote:

# Though Microsoft has not officially sided with either format, it has a number of long-standing IP cross-licensing deals with Toshiba.
But just look at DVD-DL does anyone use these extensively today with the outrageous cost of the media?

lleb 02-08-2007 05:01 PM

neither are great for the consumer, but i like the companies that are making the HD-DVD better then i do anything that Sony touches.

also as for what format will win out over the other... neither. the combo drives will win.

top that off with the fact that there are universities out there that are getting 100G of storage out of standard DVDs, why bother upgrading to something with so much insistant DRm it is not even worth it.

wolfger 02-19-2007 08:32 AM

Sony is evil, and for that reason alone I want HD-DVD to win. Their license restriction forbidding a dual format player is just silly greed. Plus, they have alienated the adult movie industry, so now HD-DVD has a strong commercial force boosting its success. Don't really care at this point which format succeeds since I don't have an HDTV, and I have no intention of buying a player for either format in the new future.

burninGpi 02-19-2007 05:45 PM

HD-DVD because it won't have SONY spyware on it.

When did this happen? I honestly think that the porn industry will be the key to the winners. You can say Blu-ray will win because of the PS3, but the Xbox360 has a HD-DVD attachment, so I don't really think thats much of an option. If the movie studios, the game companies, and the other multimedia corporations have already picked sides, that really only leaves porn. I have read that is one reason that VHS won was due to the fact that the porn industry choose it over Betamax.

Personally I want Blu-ray to win. I think its the better disk. You can't really say you don't want Blu-ray to win because of Sony being the evil DRM kings because Microsoft who may not officially be backing the HD discs is more or less behind them at this point. They're just as bad at the DRM game as anyone else. So on that note the discs are even. I really hope we don't have another DVD-R vs DVD+R, thats really annoying.
