Blimey I'v been registerd 16 years!
I just noticed Jeremy's post LQ is 19 years old.
In my day we used startx and configured our modem with PPP (...puffs smoke from pipe) (and I still can't spell) |
Congrats, it creeps up on you unawares doesn't it. :)
"PPP"? It was SLIP in my day, though I came to LQ a long time after starting Linux. |
I also used a modem when I started, had to, couldn't afford broadband..... ;)
I was a late registrant too, but have been using it full time since 1999. :) |
I have gone back to using startx and revisited PPPD for connecting to a server via a VPN 2 years ago.
That which is old can become young again. (...puffs smoke from a cigarette) I am aware of it creeping up on me. |
Congratulations on 16 years with LQ!

August 2004 for me, so 15 years...

July 4, 2003 was LQN signup for me and I was using an external US Robotics 56K. Nostalgia for The Wild West days before? ... a little, but while I remember the eye-opening delight of my first logins to a BBS and a few days later CompuServe, I couldn't be happier that I don't recall even the brand of that 2400 Baud modem. :D

At the time I lived in Wilmington, Delaware, a small city by any measure, but we had a some wonderful BBSes. One of them had such a sense of community that we organized in-person events and actually met each other face-to-face. By the time I started using Linux, though, I had had a cable connection for about six months, so I never learned the joys of PPPD. |
@allend yes I have started using startx again too :)
I can remember the days when Linux (desktops, especially) used to do what you wanted, not the other way round |
People stopped using startx?
|
I stopped a long time ago. Can't see the point of logging into a console only to run 'startx'. 'xdm' into 'fvwm' here.
The only time I ever use startx now is if I happen to need a second concurrent X session for something, but that's not very often. |
I only use startx if for whatever reason the display manager didn't run/is broken - otherwise I just login via the display manager and let that start X. Unless it's something that can't be done while X is running, then I'd start the graphical environment anyway.
Who's got the time to type in startx? More to the point, why do it when you don't have to/can have a display manager installed... |
fvwm!!!!
now that's a bit old school even for me. I fired up Enlightenment the other day, it's changed a bit, disappointed they've gone over to conformdesktop ... oops i mean freedesktop.org |
