i need to get a decent domain, and hook it up to a dynamic IP service. does anyone have any suggestions about their preffered providers for these two services? i've not registered proper domains before so i'm not really sure what features are worth paying for and so forth, free domain tranfers, dns etc...
think i'm gonna go for sodalite.org btw, or maybe slottedpig.org or partsperbillion.org any other decent suggestions welcome.
In terms of domain registration I've been quite impressed with http://www.123reg.co.uk/ they seem pretty cheap and have some nice simple options available.
Its not in England but I personally like www.register.com, it is still the standard 35 bucks a year to register, but oh so easy to get in and administer your domains on their site, unlike www.networksolutions.com my first place I registered a domain. They make it so hard to make any sort of changes on your account and domains. And they still don't always get updated properly. Oh well, if I lived in England, I would probably have some local suggestions.
I have a "dot info" address registered and hosted with www.easily.co.uk but as I am a complete duffer, I haven't got as far as doing anything with it other than using their page template wizard to announce that my site is under construction and that I haven't managed to decide what my "soap box" will be about.
Also, as I only used the £9.99 per annum option, i seem to recall that I can only upload files a couple at a time through the easily control centre. The next option is £35 per annum. The service seems to be reasonably competent. Though I haven't managed to work out how complicated I will be able to make my site when I finally get it up and running.
Perhaps you could check out some of the info in one of the computer mags (linuxformat/computeractive I subscribe to but get a few others occasionally) they seem to have plenty of ads/prices.
Freeparking.co.uk are excellent - you can transfer your domain to other services for free/change nameservers (for other hosts), web forwarding, multiple e-mail forwarders etc.
I've used them for my domain (dwrees.co.uk) for some time now and have had no problems whatsoever.
I also used 34sp.com for the web hosting with this domain - their support is top notch, and their prices are cheap
