begining burst at download

just trying to find a reason why download rate sometimes at beggining of the download goes high , sometimes twice the bandwith available.
i´ve seen a download rate of 50 mbits(6 MB /Sec ) while the DSL was only 12 mbits.
Anyone one can explain in details ?

Several causes:

1. Bandwidth limiting algorithm at the ISP side need some time to calculate the (average) bits correctly before it ca start limiting.

2. Some programs already start to download while they wait for you to click on the 'OK' key, therefore calculating the entire amount already downloaded in 1 second.

3. Inaccuracy of your client in counting the number of bits and apply a small time interval in the divisor in calculating the bits per second. Literally, dividing bits by seconds.
