Was doing the first boot set up of a new Windows 10 laptop today, at work and after all the usual:

"Hi..."
"We're setting up some crap..."

I got to the user account creation...

I don't set these up often, usually leave it to others, but I had plugged in an ethernet cable rather unthinkingly (habit maybe).

Once it got to the usual user account creation, it was demanding either a Microsoft of a Skype account... usually there is a means to circumvent this - i.e. a small link further down, but I clicked every single thing and tried entering a user name - but Microsoft account still demanded.

So at that point I decided to leave it and do some research, expecting to go around in circles for hours as one does when researching anything Microsoft.

But after three searches, I found details of the exact problem and the solution materialised:

Pull out the ethernet jack and start again.

So I took it off the network, rebooted and amazingly was allowed to create a standard local user account.

So yes, if the user has a network cable plugged in or active wifi connection and internet access, when setting up Windows 10, MS tries to force them to register an MS account... without providing the option of setting up a local user. That's quite underhanded.

You also don't need to pay to activate Windows 10 or 10 pro. That is you don't need to activate them at all as long as you're willing to put up with not being able to change the looks and having a watermark saying that it's not activated.

Windows is of course going to try to get you to activate it but you just keep skipping it as it is still free but definitely not as in Freedom!

Add, here's a fun script to be careful with: https://gist.github.com/alirobe/7f3b34ad89a159e6daa1

So more fun with Windows 10. Switched ISP's, get new modem, my laptop connects, wireless printer connects fine so everything looks OK. Next day wife opens her (windows10) laptop, connects to wifi and gets the message "connected, no internet". Daughter's windows 10 laptop does the same. Windows troubleshooter says it can't reach dns, I can ping the router fine but nothing goes through it. reset the connection in windows and it works. Next time the same thing, connected but no internet. searching says windows firewall, disable ipv6, etc. Keep trying all kinds of things and each time they boot their windows 10 laptops they connect but no internet and while I mess around it just randomly starts working.
We have multiple phones, tablets, tv's game systems, printers, raspberry pi's, linux systems, etc. All of those work with no problems, but Windows 10 can't find the internet, what a worthless OS.

Funny thing seems how bad they want you to have the internet, for marketing and other evil purposes...

"Richard Stallman Reveals 10 Suggestions He Gave To Microsoft
September 30, 2019"
Quote:
... Although Redmond has had a change of heart in recent years, Stallman still doesn’t buy Microsoft’s “contributions to open source” as there is a difference between*open source and free software. He also said we should not forget the hostile things Microsoft “famously did” in the past.

However, he went on to say that we should judge Microsoft by what it does in the future and that “it would be a mistake to judge a given action more harshly if done by Microsoft than we would if some other company did the same thing.” ...

PostScript, like TeX, is the wrong approach to a solved problem.

Whould you pay for a watch that can't keep time?

Or how about a watch that forces you into needing an internet connection, being m$ I'm suspicious are they trying to make that an excuse so I'll keep connected so they can do other junk?

Apple's 2019 "Watch" has the stunning new feature of an always-on display, meaning you can see the time without having to turn on a display. Hooray!
What was your point again?

Oh someone figured out the evil awhile back. The film "Nekrotronic" explains that someone determined a way to put actual Daemons into the Internet.

I wonder if they could have made a deal with the battery manufacturers?

My Garmin allows me to turn off power save mode, keeping it lit up all the time. It's also never just black, if there's light in the room you can see what time it is...

My point was I don't feel like going to a windows Form to find out why it can't ever keep the time right. In fact it's kind of fun being shocked sometimes, what time is it! And oh yeah, anyway we can keep them connected,,, let'$ do it "team."

Won't say I've never had this problem in Linux (though not recently) but I've always been able to fix it there.

Well, I managed to break windows. It would no longer see the file system of my phone. Why? Because I deleted the phone app. Of course that also takes out the part that's responsible for actually seeing the phone's file system (yes, Microsoft and logic is like an oxymoron).

Also, I'm a gaming addict (yes, that actually exists), so being confronted with anything gaming related on a daily basis is not a good idea for me, so I had to do complicated stuff to get rid of everything gaming related. What does Windows 10 do with e.v.e.r.y. update? Yep, you got it. Put back all the gaming related stuff and getting my brain going on "hey, actually playing a game would be a nice idea," taking me nearly to the point of relapse.

Also, I don't like complicated and Windows is the definition of complicated.

So, I ended up installing Linux on my current desktop and the problems ended up evaporating.

The Microsoft philosophy has always been that you get what they want, not what you want. Remember when they got rid of the start button? And how every version enforces a new desktop that is uglier than the one before? And the compulsory updates to bring people who actually prefer the old version into line?

As for addictions, commercial companies do everything they can to encourage them, because an addict is a captive market.
