Yea, it might be worth a try; it's always been beyond my technical abilities before but my technical abilities have always looked a lot lower than they actually turn out to be.

It's been an incredible fifteen years. I hate to think who I would have turned out to be without the Linux community. The people are what I am going to miss the most, not the "free stuff".

A very short while ago, people would describe me as "the computer guy" and now I feign total ignorance about all things tech and am grateful for the poverty that gives me a "free ticket" out of the Windows10/iOs/Android dystopia.

What a drag it is getting old.

But on the bright side, I just clonezilla'd my trusty old right-before-the-fall 2008ish image of Damn Small Linux onto a brand new 120 gig IDE drive from China and am about to plug it into my T21 and rebuild my own private nostalgianet.

Hey, my grandmother never threw away her Victrola, either.

Here is the scoop. This is very hard to share, sad also but is needed.

There are folks who poop on top of the bldg., I live in. It is assumed that these folks are addicts, have no control under
influence and hence they poop. When it rains the poop flows. That is not all, few of them even manage to come indoors to
sleep in winter and poop on the stairs etc., Then also urinate or vomit, walk around and spread it all around. This I was informed happens in a few other bldgs., close by and hence the janitors there even got tired of the cleaning and quit.

Here are some related links:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_defecation
http://poopreport.com
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSw79yRnDVs

Now in a tropical country in nature all these waste are decomposed fast and used by plants, trees. However, in cold climate
in cities this just stays and creates big time issues. This is a biohazard. This trend is quite strong in some cities and is documented in youtube videos.

Now one may ask how is this related to old computers and linux ? Here is the very big connection, say you are carrying around an old PC tower, then if there is poop on the staircase that you dont watch, step on it slide and then fall with the old PC tower, get cuts/bruises and get infected by this poop then it becomes a very, very big issue.

That is not all, all this biohazard is an open invitation for several pests that breed with glee in this old crumbling bldg.,
This together with a few other issues is forcing bldg., owner to do major repairs. Hence, I am forced to move out next week,
it will be -40C outsides, we have a winter storm and I have two tropical parrots that need 20C + to survive. The entire apt. needs to be emptied and it is very likely that I will loose most of my Old Computers. As much as this is bad, it is still not as bad as the entire bldg., wiped out by a fire or levelled by a quake etc., So I am basically forced to accept my losses, smile, keep moving and do my best from that point. I am not sure if and when I will be online again. I wish to make the best of this time, chat more with folks in person, slow down relax and plan my next set of future moves carefully.

Until next time, thanks for all the good sharing here, best wishes and have fun with your old computers.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fentanyl

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Janssen

It is a lot of work to develop a drug like Fentanyl. Lots of cash, lots of human efforts, education and training. Not easy at all. There is a purpose to serve humanity in doing such things.

However, if folks start abusing each prescription drug, then guess atleast some of us are toast big time. I only saw this issue from far before but now it starting to get closer. Never expected this to affect my use of old computers so much. This is intense indeed.

NomadBSD is just what I need now:
https://distrowatch.com/?newsid=10445

However, most public access computers are secure and don't permit rebooting it, using own OS etc.,
Else it will be very good.

This is sad news. We'll miss your posts especially to this thread. Could you put your equipment into storage? In this country we have companies who rent out storage and lots of people use them.

This event is pretty much like a missile striking ones life. Only the worse things are natural disasters that destroy
entire communities or fire etc., There is pest infestation, this is spreading to other places also. It is not like have too much stuffs, just this apt. is small and somehow the pests found it convenient to spread it appears. They might evacuate others also here as time continues. This entire bldg., is old and needs to be renovated, crumbling, so very convenient for pets to spread, specially in winter. Hence, they are forced to act so that it doesn't morph into other epidemics it seems. Lucky me, I am at the ground zero of all this due to my clutter, I started decluttering ferociously but it is too late now. If I don't co-operate, this gets worse and affects health of others, then I can be fined or even charged strongly. Besides I follow the law, so I will co-operate altho I am a bit slow. The authorities will go thru all stuffs I have, anything that is contaminated in their view simple has to be thrown, this includes electronics and old computers. Will be lucky if they allow me to get the hard drive out atleast. I chat with a social worker and he said situations like this are not uncommon, they do happen sometimes and one just needs to relocate and start again. There are some empty spots in this scenario that have to be filled/answered as I go along. Even a few months ago I couldn't imagine anything remotely close to this. It is not at all easy but in one to 3 months the picture will be more clear, whatever lies ahead.

The Gift of Desperation: Nowhere Else to Turn

I watched few of these sermons to get strength in this situation. Thing is that
we also attract the wrong things when we are weak, so need to be careful about that.

I prayed to Lord and the answer I got was to try different art materials of better quality, so I tried
Liquitex viscous acrylics, Craypas oil pastels and Crayola 64 and 152 pack crayons.
If this issue didn't exist, I would not have tried these special media. They came out quite good,
sorry no pictures. Even with my art materials if there are signs of infestation, they will be thrown.
Cant question them.

Check out local weather above, not a nice time to have to leave apt. Not convenient to carry old PC around either two factors, slippery and cold snow can get inside the PC also.

I am a long way away geographically and yet so close socioeconomically that your posts feel like looking in the mirror sometimes except for my own lack of positive attitude.

Do you have a car? A lot of people live in cars in my neck of the woods and it really isn't that different from living in a house/apartment, just much smaller. It would hardly be ideal for the parrots, but at least they would have heat and you.

There may not be any more old computers, but there will always be concepts such as "art" however they express themself.

Please check in when you can and stay safe.

Okay.

Community, does anyone live in Montreal and/or have offsite contact info for rvijay?

We need to get info about what is called an "extreme weather shelter":

http://www.iheartradio.ca/cfax-1070/...oria-1.8596280

They have them in my own country and it isn't welfare or charity, it is analagous to calling an ambulance. People can die from weather.

I do have local contacts and help, just has to come around at the right time. No car but the public transport here is good.
Specially for the parrots, having parrots is a big complication at a time like this. City opens extreme weather shelter after a certain point, we are not there yet for now. I am very far from Victoria on the other side of Canada.

My life has always been like this, like Book of Job in the Bible. So have had to make peace with my bad luck and poverty. Did pretty well so far in reflection.

Now I feel like leaving with just a small notebook, few change clothes and a pencil even.
In this cold, even a pen will freeze and not write.

Here are some very nice articles that we can learn from above. I am very thankful for all my problems in life, have learned a lot from them. If I was given the change again, rather have my problems than have a smooth rich life. Can extend the Linux concept to real life and give others a hand also when possible.

It seems compassionate folks have it really bad these days. I was wondering why it is so hard to get temporary foster care for my 2 small parrots, the Vet docs., focus more on money I felt, they didn't have an answer for me now.
Then I came across these articles that are very touching:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/natio...5f4_story.html
https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/201...-medicine.html
https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/da...?pid=169766762
https://news.hamlethub.com/riverdale...nues-to-unfold

If my situation improves in future, perhaps I can donate some of my art to such Vet Docs., for their relief, or for those
who work in animal rescues also.

I'm not going to unload my own personal tragedies here, just comment on how much I admire you and learn from you, rvijay. You are absolutely right about how we can extend the most important concepts of Linux outward, beyond free software and old computers.

NomadBSD looks like a logical next step if I cannot effectively communicate and troubleshoot the problems I am having with X. Learning to function in the command line only is another possibility.

Radio does have the potential to do some of the things that our once-beloved internet no longer can:

https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/a...-diy-anonymous
http://www.hamuniverse.com/shortwave.html
https://www.wikihow.com/Use-a-Shortwave-Radio

But more intriguing than that even is something that is happening at a local park--it isn't exactly a community, more like a solidarity network.

So here is the scoop. Tomorrow this place will be locked up, I have to leave with minimum items.
Then after a week or so from then due to pest infestation, all my items have to be discarded.
So I will be starting from scratch. My life has always been like this, one challenge after another.
I will be starting fresh all over and need to do the best from this point on.

The good thing is a refuge will come and pick up my parrots and keep them as long as needed until I find
a new place. So I can't complain.
