anyone own a palm?

just a really dumb question about palm pilots:

can I (/ how can I ) use my palm as a portable HD?
it seems resonable because I can transfer word doc's
and even read them on my palm, but can I store binary
files that palm can't read? (e.g. rpm's)

(I'm assuming that you are using the "Palm" or whatever PDA using PalmOS)

2 years ago, I used a palm before which is Palm 3xe with Palm OS 3.5. Actually I was developing palm programs that time. I remember there was a palm office suit which could be synchronized with the Microsoft word and excel etc. But it didn't transfer the doc files directly into the palm. It just converted the doc file to the palm database format and store it in the palm. I'm quite sure that non-palmOS format files could not be transfer into the palm.
Well..that's 2 years ago. Technologies change very fast.

u mean like using zip drives n such??
nope, not as far as i know. (i'm using visor prism running palmos 3.5).
everything needs to be converted to palm based files ie.pdb in order to be synced into ur palm.

unless of cos there is a pc software/interface that can retrive back the stuff and convert it back to its original format ie. rpm's; which i havent seen around anywhere yet. ( can anyone enlighten me?)

Yeah. I think it's difficult to do with the earlier palmOSs. I'm only familier with the PalmOS 3.5. But with the latest PalmOSs, you can listen to the PM3, watch the video, so does that mean, the mp3 and jpeg files are directly synced into the palm? If it does, I think there is posibility if you really hack into it.

A palm uses battery backed ram and there is no seperate storage and running memory spaces. One problem with your idea is if you fill the little sucker all the way up it wouldn't run, sort of like a PC with not enough ram only worse. But I guess it's possible to link with it in a way that you can just allocate some space out for storage.

How much memory do the latest gen palms have anyhow?

I guess you could also cheat and just change a file's extension and try to save it as a document or a palm app.

you can get really big memory cards like 128MB
and you can view bitmaps and jpg's.
I guess I would have to write some prog to turn binary
data into bitmap's and then retrive it.
p.s. how 'bout compiling linux for the palm? ;-)
