In the US, copyrights last for 60 years. Then the work changes into public domain. It's still owned, still is intellectual property, but it's not unlawful to download it and watch it without the consent of the property owner. You can't sell it, or make money off of it.

That is the way I understand that. So anything before 1960 is in the public domain now. I don't think that it is unlawful for youtube to have it, and for you to watch it.

Anyone else know more on this topic?

Edit:
Netflix is renting those DVD's, but, I'm sure that Netflix has an agreement with the intellectual property owner to rent it. And that's because the owner is getting a cut of the rental.

^ makes sense. I had a look at the uploader for Rio Bravo, It's "Grjngo - Western Movies", there's plenty more old movies.
It does look like they're all from the 40s/50s.
They also have a website, and a German company behind it.

I trust and hope people are posting links to films they have seen themselves AND would recommend to others, not just a list of movies.

US copyrights can be renewed. And, they can be owned by corporations. For instance, the courts rightly decided that the rights to "Mickey Mouse®" did not expire with Walt Disney (RIP), even though he was the artist who originally drew him. They belong to "The Walt Disney Company, Inc."

As for good movies to watch –*I recently watched an A&E special, "Ike – Countdown to D-Day." An excellent nine-part film that is historically accurate.

Sorry I should have titled this thread "Links to good movies I have watched from end to end and would recommend to others". There's no point in just providing the links that a YouTube search would find, because that will give movies mostly of poor quality. Apologies, I should have made that clearer beforehand.

It's like asking someone to recommend a good book to read, but they deliver the contents of a whole bookshop to your home - so you are back to square one.

https://archive.org/download/rog561b_netzero_305
Edit: The first link plays the wrong movie, but the second link plays the movie when 306.mp4 is clicked. Try this: https://ia800401.us.archive.org/22/i...ro_305/306.mp4

Hot Saturday 1932

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpH90rOMx0E
This video is titled "HOT SATURDAY (Drama, USA 1932) 720p; Cary Grant, Nancy Carroll, Randolph Scott". There are other easier to find "Hot Saturday 1932" videos on YouTube that have been distorted and so are definitely not recommended.

This Gun For Hire 1942

Pickpocket with moral limits.

Foreign Intrigue 1956

Eastmancolor. The image quality is not so good. Same quality and probably exactly the same video file in both links.

Update: a link to a better quality image: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xab-VkVLkjw The webpage is in Greek but the film is in English. The Greek subtitles are optional and can be clicked away.

All of these old movies are good.

Titanic 1943
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GgKPJeSrjSo

Cast a Dark Shadow
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JLfNYZnzmzs

Destroyer
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PGkBbwSjAVU

On the beech
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=O9tweuR450A

The capture
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ui19MwNK10k

Example, get best that you can for the title:
Code:
yt-dlp -F https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ui19MwNK10k
You see that the best video for that one is 135. The audio to go with that is 140 (aac goes with mp4)

Code:
yt-dlp -f 135 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ui19MwNK10k -o reb.mp4
yt-dlp -f 140 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ui19MwNK10k -o reb.m4a

ffmpeg -i reb.mp4 -i reb.m4a -c:a copy -c:v copy Rebecca.mp4
And before you waste you time, you could preview that video with:
Code:
yt-dlp -f 135 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ui19MwNK10k -o - | mplayer -

Excellent! I shall have a look at them. I was getting lonely on this thread. And thanks for the useful advice about off-line viewing.

Technicolor sexist fantasies

The sexism, racism, coercion, and so on in all these old movies is shameful and totally unacceptable today.

Kismet 1944 - Harems

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGL2LCTGDvQ Edit: the link has very recently stopped working.

The Black Swan 1942 - Pirates

A much better definition image can be seen on a Portugese webpage, although unfortunately the Portugese translation of the title is offensive.
