Broadchurch
a police procedural, combined with a small town social & psychological analysis spanning a whole season (8 episodes) - i'm sure it's been done before, but this is just outstanding! i love the british southern shore, i love the less-than-perfect main characters (a middle-aged olivia colman as ellie miller is a brave choice), but what i love most:
- the first season is dedicated to solving the crime.
- the second season is dedicated to the trial.
and both seasons just rock.
admittedly, there's a few more things to keep you entertained & exited, but that'd be telling.
I am a huge fan of pre and post war Japanese Classic Cinema and J-horror.
Anything by Akira Kurosawa or starring Toshiro Mifune is good. I Live In Fear is about a man who survived the atomic attack and has a morbid fear of radiation and nuclear war.
When the Last Sword Is Drawn and The Hidden Blade are great examples of life as a Samurai. The Sword of Doom, starring Tatsuya Nakadai as a sociopathic killer is one of my all time favorites and not to be missed. Also featuring Toshiro Mifune.
Maybe not for everybody, but The Happiness of Us Alone, about a deaf woman who marries a deaf and dumb man and the hardships they endure is a great movie.
As for J-horror, Ichi the Killer, Audition or anything by Takashi Miike is a good bet for a gore fest and all out crazy.
It's a long time since I saw it, and in my memory Being John Malkovich stuck as another comedy a la The Big Lebowski or maybe even The Truman Show - boy, was I wrong!
This is some seriously (no, funnily) weird sh!t.
Usually I like to have some sort of morale, but this film is so abstruse & absurd that I was happy and entertained even when the hero really gets it in the end...
PS:
I just came back from a month of traveling, I thought my Subscribed threads would be overflowing, but it seems I'm not the only one who is doing other things during the summer...
