I trawled through a few less entertaining movies on my disk recently
  • The House of Gucci - overly long, imho. Acting is good and watch it for the big acting names, if you want to. I found it very slow, and ended up getting the wrong end of the plot because I was skipping so much. I expected to be wowed by the wealth on display, and definitely wasn't.
  • The BFG: Watch it with a kid under 10, or if you can step into those shoes. It's harmless childish fun. An interesting aspect of Roald Dahl's books is his ability to mangle words (e.g. 'Snozzcumber')and have you know what he means. It's engaging if you let it be.
  • The good, the bad, & the ugly: It's the low budget Western recipe one time too many. It did not work for me. Maybe I was foolish to leave the sound up.

Watched The Matrix Resurrections a couple of weeks ago and it was pretty underwhelming to be honest...

The storyline was pretty thin IMHO, and the fight scenes were pretty short compared to previous Matrix movies. While the actor playing Smith done a decent job, I much prefer Hugo Weaving as Smith - he was far better for that character.

It honestly seems to me that The Matrix Resurrections was intended to be a precursor for another sequel, given how thin the storyline is, and particularly the ending of it. So I think there would almost certainly have to be another installment in the works - hopefully it's better than the last one though...

For me at least, anything beyond the original Matrix film was poor - and the first was overrated. I watched the first sequel in the cinema when it came out and that was terrible and never bothered with the next one. Saw snippets of that years later - and saw enough.

Started watching "Eternals" last night and this is the only Marvel film so far that I've really wanted to outright switch off (I'm quite tolerant and I can watch and enjoy watching a lot of dross - and having kids thats a good thing sometimes), but this one has plumbed new depths. It's offensive to ones intelligence, condescending, clumsy, cliched and the plot is a mess. Acting is so buttock clenchingly bad, I was actually embarrassed for them. I was glad it was getting late, so we will watch over two or more nights. Might get the second half over with this evening... [clenches]

I browsed a torrent site for it's top 100 torrents. Many were repeats, but some names kept coming up with good reviews. These won't have enough blood, guts, suspense, sex, or strong language for some. The links are to imdb user reviews.

CAVEAT: I cannot review or recommend any of these yet

Smilla's Sense of Snow

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smilla...of_Snow_(film)
I read the book a long time ago (it came out 1992) and loved it. Deeply unsettling, strangely & darkly beautiful.
I saw the movie years later and it didn't leave a bad impression.
Yesterday, I decided to watch it again.
I think it was flawed. I still remember aspects of the book that were completely left out, or long parts that were reduced to a few scenes.
I suspect it shows even if you haven't read the book.
The movie is 2h long but really should have been a miniseries.
The complex relationship of the 2 main characters is (largely) reduced to something that reminds me of a Humphrey Bogart movie.
Other characters were sketched properly, with depth, but the sketch was never completed. The film was simply too short for that.

Even so, I liked it. Strange beauty permeates it.
The story is complex, captivating, haunting.

If for nothing else, I still recommend it for the stunning (non-CGI) footage of Greenland.

I'm struggling to think of even one example of a sequel I've seen recently that was as good as the original. It always seems to be the case to me that nearly every time they make a sequel, or remake, it ends up being pretty underwhelming or just falls flat - and not just for movies either...

The Ghostbusters 2016 movie is a prime example of the above... I've seen snippets of the trailer for it and I wouldn't even bother watching it.

It seems to be a trend with Hollywood these days... just more crap that's barely even worth the cost of production, let alone watching...

Not sure about overrated, but I watched the 1st in the right surroundings (presented to us by a very enthusiastic punk/hippie pot dealer in a squatted house) and I loved it.
I understand how some fans turned it into some sort of cult, because of its message, but it's still weird because the sequels are sooo bad and Keanu Reeves best acting quality is to not move a muscle in his face (you should see his other films, they're even worse).

Strangely, the Wachowski's have made quite a few significantly better movies since Matrix I - just not its sequels.

Oof. Don't get me started on Marvel films. What would be left without effects & fighting scenes? A skeleton story that is practically the same across all their productions.
"Character"? Keep it to one dimension please. The one that transports "righteous anger". More isn't needed.

I tend to agree with you when it comes to the Terminator movies, well at least the first and second ones anyway. But Terminator 3 was a bit of a let down IMHO, so I could say much the same about that one as I did about The Matrix Resurrections movie above.

I haven't seen the Terminator movies after the third one though (well not completely anyway), but from the snippets I have seen of them, they don't appear to be as good as Terminator 1 & 2.

I think they lose something without Linda Hamilton in them playing Sarah Connor.

I think the guys who did "back to the Future" a while back were on the money.

3 movies, where they trashed the De Lorean, sent the Doc willingly into the future, and sent everybody off in different directions and then refused another movie. Too many franchises are driven into mediocrity or much worse by 'one movie more' or 'one series more.'
