AM3 motherboards compatible with AM2(+) CPUs?

I see that AMD released the AM3 type CPU at some point, and the latest motherboards are now designed for it. Does anyone know if these boards are compatible with AM2 and AM2+ CPUs? Can I use one of them without having to upgrade my AM2+ CPU? I'm looking at new mobos; should I rule out the ones designed for AM3? If the answer is "it depends on the board," I'll stay away from them.
