To all who were offended by my earlier post "Linux still SUCKS!", I want to apologize. I was having a bad install experience and had to vent. But I'm feeling much better now!
I truly think Linux has come a long way, and has a lot of potential! I just have to remind myself, that these things take time and patience, which I've never really had much of. And I'm sure that eventually, I'll figure this DVD thing out!
So, to the Linux community I say, hat's off! Keep striving. And keep up the good work!
I get the impression that you're looking at linux in an...odd way. The bit about "just because it looks...like a Windows system..." gives the impression you have an idea in your head about how an operating system and various programs ought to behave, ie, like Windows, and get frustrated when it doesn't behave that way.
I think you'll have a much more pleasant experience if you approach it as though you have absolutely no experience with computers and are learning everything for the first time. I don't think it's any more difficult to get DVDs going in Linux than windows, at least Windows XP, and in fact easier. I recall a couple years ago spending many hours trying to find the right software to play DVDs on Windows XP. It's just in a lot of cases these days everything is preinstalled in Windows or Macs, and for legal and ethical reasons, Linux can't distribute that software. Blame bad patent laws, not operating systems.
Sadly, it looks likely in the coming years that people will continue to have these frustrating experiences with Linux, given the likelihood that h.264 will continue to dominate as HTML5 video spreads.
