Add an Icon to The System Tray

How can I add an icon to the system tray by a bash script or C++ program?

For example I had written a bash script which, checks wheter the internet connection is available or not (for example by pinging a site); And if it is available I want to add an icon in the tray to indicate this; How can I do it?
I think X should have an interface for it...

And also how can I do it in C or C++ program? As I check QT toolkit doesn't have an interface for this;

Try looking at the code for the Gaim desktop icon plugin.

Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.
