Exclamation A paradox!

Okay, look at the computer outlined in my signature, look? Good. Now look at this one:

AMD K-6-3D 550Mhz
320 Mgs Ram
20GB harddrive
(assume all other hardware is the same)

Sound like an improvement? Yeah, it does, doesn't it?

It isn't. It goes slower, by far. What gives? The hardware is better in every way! Could switching from a P2 to and AMD K-6 really hurt that bad? All of my games run slower. Normal "computer" tasks work quicker, though. (Office, defrag, OS loading)

Games running slowly is usually related to problems with 3D acceleration, or somtimes DMA or IRQ issues with things like your soundcard.

Switching to a K6 will hurt your 3D acceleration, as the K6 has fewer optimisations than a Pentium-II. You can see which processor features are available with
Code:
cat /proc/cpuinfo
(look at the “flags” field).

Pentium 2 massacres anything AMD put out in the same era. Your not imagining things that AMD really is a lot slower...

Ah. I guess you can't win em all. I can play UT2k4 on the computer in my sig, but I would be hard-pressed to get normal UT working right on this AMD.

I smell a server-ization coming on. I'll just Linux-ify it and make a web and file server. Seeing as how it does normal computer things faster than my other computer, it should run profptd and apache like a champ.
