A mini-pc for the masses

I was checking out the linuxdevices.com website and i found this article about AMD releasing a new $189 Internet PC with windows CE and it's capability to run linux. check it out here

The only problem I see is the modem but that can be remidied by getting a USB network adapter if you use broadband. Or (maybe) getting a compactflash usb reader and a compactflash modem

Cute little box, but I don't really see much value in it... You can get a surplus computer with the same specs for less dollars, with the addition of floppy and CD drives, and is expandable.

To top it all off, it doesn't have ethernet. If it had a single NIC, it might be worth something... Some remote box somewhere controlling something, or a thinclient. Give it dual ethernet, and I'd really be interested.

I have a P!!! 500MHz Dell OptiPlex running ClarkConnect for my internet router. I bought it for $15, and had to add a second NIC at $5.

I can see usefullness for this system in foriegn countries or for College students on the cheap who don't have a lot of space. But for the rest of us it's just another toy.

It looks cute. But that's not an original idea. For a long time they've been trying to create computer like those, but it never got too popular. I personally think that it's still expensive and not flexible. And Windows on it seriously won't reduce the price unless MS supports it for free.... but when MS supports it for free, I bet my X that the hell will turn into a frozen cookie.

Second hand monitor = 30/50 bucks, Second hand PC = 100 bucks. Heck, I've even seen laptops cheaper than that over here:

seriously man, the above is about 225 USD... the page is in swedish, but the specifications are quite clear.

Nice little toy but I think I would rather having something more powerful like these ones:
