1gb DDR400 or 1.5gb DDR333?

I'm about to buy a new computer in the next weeks and it will be an athlon. But it seems like AMD socket 754 motherboards can take only 2 dimm of DDR400, and if you put 3 dimms they drop back to 333MHz. I was just wondering if I should buy 1gb of DDR400 or go with 1.5gb of DDR333.

Also, I heard about mandrake not taking 1gb ram or more... What can I do so it can take it?

Thanks

DDR400 no question!

You'll have a hard time using more than 512MB of ram anyway.

First of all thanks for the reply

I was also wondering if I'm better to get 1gb of good ram like ocz platinum or go with 2gb of cheap ram?

As I said, you'll struggle to use more than 1/2 a gig in normal use anyway, it's all about speed, quality rather than amount. 2gigs isn't better than 1gig if you're not having to swap anyway.

So yeah, 2x512 of good quality DDR400 (get your CPU bus up to 200Mhz for a nice performance over 166).

Thanks again

I'll go with 2x512 OCZ platinum then

But OCZ platinum DDR400 is in reality DDR500 reduced to 400 for ultra low latency. So am I better overclocking my fsb to 250mhz to get the full 500 and reduce my process multiplier or will I burn my motherboard? lol

As long as your CPU multiplier is unlocked then yeah, although be careful and make increases from 200 slowly and benchmarking to check temps after load.

Thanks alot!

I'll try to increment slowly the bus to see what I can get from my new machine when I get it and I'll post the results

Hope I won't burn something

Thanks again

did you buy it already?

anyway

it depends on what you want to use it for.

CAD, MAYA, Gimp need quantitiy. openoffice needs quality.

for games, games with large maps need quantity, games with small maps need qauality

anyway, i dont think you will use more than 512mb anyway, not 1.5 gigs by a longshot. i have 512mb and i dont even have a swap partition(im planning on making one soon though) and i havent had any problems at all. havent done any gaming/major gimping though.

Hmmm... I always use about 100mb swap... but I have 512mb sdram for the moment. Most of the time I chat, do some programing, run a webserver 24/24, listen music through xmms, go on the net etc. What I most care about is that I want to be able to run unreal tournament 2004 with graphics at max and the number of bots I want. I also want to be able to run doom 3 with also graphics at max. Maybe farcry and half-life 2 too but I don't expect much since I'll need to play them with cedega or wine.

Do you think I'm ok with 1024mb OCZ Platinum PC3200?

ya, youre good.

but i think that a new video card would be a more worthwhile upgrade if gaming is what you want. i can play hl2/farcry/ut2k4 on 1152x864 on high(medium/high) with my 9600xt on only 512mb ram. but i also have a faster processor so that might also be a problem...

and im not sure if youre going to keep your current computer, but jsut so you know, that ram wont work in there.

Yea I'm going to buy not only ram I'll buy 1024mb OCZ platinum rev.2 but also an athlon64 3200+ with a motherboard asus k8n-e-dlx and a new HD But you're right I think 1024mb will already be more than enough since my videocard isn't that good. But I can't change only the videocard because my current P3 board doesn't allow me to use agp in linux... so my agp8x card runs as pci. And if I change board + processor + ram + HD I can't afford a new videocard too lol

Thanks for the help!
