100% CPU for long periods
 

I know this may seem paranoid, but im a paranoid kinda guy. Im wondering if using 100% cpu for long periods of time (14-16) hours could be an issue. I know it probably wont be, but im using a P4 2.0ghz processor. Will it heat up a lot and maybe shorten the life? In case your wondering, I run Seti@home under wine while I sleep and at school. It uses 100% of my cpu power.

I have that problem too, sometimes. I just reset the computer or relogin and it works fine. ;)

I thought it was only me.

It will cause your CPU to run a bit warmer, but thats about it. As long as you have adequate cooling, you shouldn't have any problems.

<edit> after I actually went back and _read_ the original question... If you're runnning seti@home then yeah you're gonna burn off some juice, but if you're not then you should find out where those clock cycles are going.

I just have the regular stock fans in my case

it should be fine with stock fans, make sure you have the options in you kernel enabled which allows the processor to report overheating, then if you ever have problems with your computer restarting for no reason check fans first

I have about 5 80mm fans in my and around my case. 2 pointing straight at the cpu and the RAM, 1 in front of the case using 2 5.25 bays, 1 at the top of the case pointing at the PSU and 1 pointing at the motherboard from the left. :D This is not including the 2 cpu fan size fans that cool the Harddrive. Its weird...since i have gkrellm2 i can see the cpu activity and sometimes it gets stuck on 100%. I don't use seti@home or whatever. The problem hasn't occured for a while now so im ok. ;) When it does happen i freak out. I do notice the computer gets kinda laggy and sluggish. The computer is being cooled like crazy so thats not an issue.

Could it be the cpu is being cooled TOO much? Nah. More fans coming in. :D

i have heard that linux sometimes moves information around like a mac from time to time for its own reasons (italics mean i dont understand what im talking about here just relaying basic informationg) and this will cause your hdd to spin up without reason and to take cpu power possibly this has something to do with your problem?? using the hdd at these times might explain the sluggishness

i think in my next computer i may get it liquid cooled...not cuz im worried about the temp just cuz of bragging rights...heard about liquid nitrogen cooling too...im gonna look into that but sounds far too expensive

Why not run a native Linux seti@home client, like TkSeti?

That's what I was wondering too. He could also run the command line version and send the output to /dev/null. Maybe he likes to look at the pretty graphics of the windows version.

Starting at graphs for hours on end is one of the most exciting things I've ever done in my life :)

of course I like to stare at the graphs! No, actually its just because I just got wine up and running and I was rummaging through my windows drive looking for something to run. I came across seti@home and that just brought to mind the whole 100% cpu thing. I dont actually use it.

Don't worry about it. Two of my private PCs and 10 at work are crunching Seti@Home packets 24/7. They are all in the 1GHz class and are equipped with standard cooling fans. Some of the boxes have been doing that for 2 years now without any hassles.
