Disappointing to find the full text requires JAMA membership, probably not that common here in LQ. Having not seen the full text, does it detail how to download data from one of these devices? JAMA is usually vague about those kind of technical details, and I suspect most of these smart doohickeys want to upload the data to their manufacturer (or other web/cloud location) with a proprietary method.
@RandomTroll, “users get the information directly etc.” Yes, I’m aware. I made the mistake of thinking that the post had something to do with hacking the device to look at the raw data, or the underlying software...
@michaelk. It’s a sad commentary on where we are that the gentleman in the story you referenced ignored all of his senses and symptoms. He paid more attention and gave more credit to his electronics than his mind or body. I think if I felt like crap and was bleeding out, I might conclude that an ER was the next location without the help of Apple. I am not saying that in certain cases these things don’t pick up asymptomatic arrhythmias and can be useful. Unfortunately, there are probably cases of harm done by false reassurance from the device too.

There will be the occasional miracle story as posted by michaelk, however, for most people it is nothing more then marketing and highly inaccurate. Could also be dangerous with misleading information. Only a matter of time before Apple and others are sued because the watch did not detect a problem and the person was having a heart attack, or the watch says they are having an emergency and its just a false alarm.
Better for people to practice preventative measures then rely on these devices: lose weight, gentle exercise, walk daily especially after one meal, do not sit too long, do not stand too long, eat a moderate/well rounded diet, do not eat too much or too little, do not drink too many liquids, limit medications to only what is necessary if any at all, eat natural food-minimal to no processing, reduce stress, etc....
