Instead of "more /boot/grub/menu.lst", you could also try:
less /boot/grub/menu.lst
cat /boot/grub/menu.lst
nano /boot/grub/menu.lst
vi /boot/grub/menu.lst
emacs /boot/grub/menu.lst
pico /boot/grub/menu.lst
ee /boot/grub/menu.lst
...
At least the command "ls" should work. It should show you the files and folders on the hard disk.
These commands should list some of the commands and programs available:

But if you are completely new to Linux, it would indeed be better and easier to just download, burn and install another Linux distribution.
Or like the previous poster said: go back to the shop where you got the PC and ask them to reinstall or install another Linux...
