Electric is not a total solution. It may be part of a solution. A 6000 pound car not paying any federal or state tax on roads isn't really good for roads. The exotic materials and complex manufacturing on these cars are not green. Electricity isn't free by any means. Nuclear may provide somewhat green if you don't care about the side effects. Wind kills birds. Solar isn't competitive unless you go with the Spanish examples of using heat to power. Costs more energy more to make a solar PV than it will ever return. Lucky the Chinese have dammed up a river to make them.
Since sanctions on Iran are being lifted, that has also contributed to the drop in prices. I wonder though when the next false war will occur, so that the prices can sore again, after all big oil companies now are losing their profits. Time for some lobbying to get another war started, after all Iran is next door.
Yes, it now costs less to drive to the store and buy a $5.00 a gallon of milk.
Probably due to transport costs. After all even though the price of unleaded has dropped, diesel still remains at a premium price. Which to me makes no sense, since if diesel is supposed to be whats left over from refined gas, it shouldn't be more expensive.
I do not question anything that has been said, but that is the past. I am looking to tomorrow.
We have depended on hydro, coal, oil, natural gas, and nuclear for electricity for some time. Most people have no idea haw much of our current energy is nuclear, but it is more than most think. All of those are time limited and impact the ecology.
Wind power does not have to harm anything. I am excited by the experiments with wind power generation with no moving parts. (using water, so not appropriate for dry country, but like FREE GOLD elsewhere) Solar has the potential to generate more power than we can possbily use, if we can learn to collect it efficiently and without negative impact to the environment.
Storage has improved greatly, but in other ways we are about where we should have been in 1975 when it comes to exploring and exploiting alternative energy. While it will (must) get better, I see no reason to wait to jump in and save money (and our world).
For me, a car with 360 Mile range that can charge in 5 hours is all I need. While I have driven for 30 hours at need, I am too old to enjoy that now. If I can drive for 6 hours and then sleep while the car charges, I am good for going anywhere on the continent. How many years before we have a car that will run 18 hours on a 4 hour charge? Does it matter, if what we have today is good enough for the majority of the population?
I want my Jetson car, self driving, and self charging, but that is a cartoon. Electric cars are today, and getting better. I want gas down to $0.50 per gallon again, because not one wants or needs to buy it and there is no demand. I want the oil wells out of my park, and the trees back. I want a clean world, and go go where I want without feeling like I am killing my world. We can DO that. We can almost do that NOW, and WILL do it soon, if we do not let oil companies and profiteers ( and purchased politicians) derail the process.
Sorry for the volume. Someone hit my "RANT HERE" button.

Now, I say use Jetson cars.
I agree that those cars do tear up the roads.
OTOH, I am not sure how much of the gas taxes actually is used on road repairs.
In Texas, 38 cents of tax per gallon is more than enuf for roads with no potholes.
But it ain't happening.
And their emissions are non-existent.
The electric utilities produce less pollution than cars by far.
