Here is a solution.
Reboot at run level 3 and login as root, then
#XFree86 -configure
It will display some text and at the bottom of the text is the next command to run
#XFree86 -xf86config /root/XF86Config.new
You should see a blank screen with "X" cursor, hit Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to leave that screen and then
#cp XF86Config.new /etc/X11/XF86Config
note your old /etc/X11/XF86Config is saved as /etc/X11/XF86Config.backup
Reboot and hope this solves the problem.
