Want to install FC3 as a dualboot with windows XP

I have an hp pavilion a250n computer with the OEM version of windows xp that came with it. I have tried in the past to do a dualboot with RedHat 9, but failed. I installed the grub bootloader and had windows xp as the default option, but after it booted the windows section windows gave some sort of error (and I'm positive it wasn't the dualboot problem which modifies the partition headers). I am 99.9% positive that it was because I was using the HP version of windows, because when I had the retail version of win xp on my computer, the dualboot with GRUB worked fine.

I want to attempt to try this again with Fedora Core 3. This time I'm going to try Lilo instead of GRUB to see if I get any better results. Has anyone ever had this problem with a dualboot? Is there something I can do to avoid this again?

hmmm even tho im a total newb id liked to try and help. I built my own computer so its not a Dell or HP or any of that kinda thing and i used a Dell Windows XP reinstallation CD i got from a friend. After that when i was interested in Fedora Core 3 i installed it with the GRUB boot loader and it worked fine. Just in case tho, you should make a bootable backup and then give the GRUB thing another try, if anything bad happens use the backup.

Well, dell provides a retail version of windows xp for it's customers (I have a dell laptop), so that explains why that happend.

Can anyone else help me?

I run both a Debian/XP system and FC3/XP system, and i have not had a single problem setting up the dual boot, as long as windows is installed on the first drive on the first active partition ( basically the C:\ ) and linux is installed afterwards, ( i use grub, but have used LILO in the same fashion ) and it has always worked as long as i installed windows first, then installed linux....

Im not sure if this helps ( i was actually looking for the anwser to my own question when i came across this ) but i figgured i would help where i could.

installing fc3 as a dualboot with winxp

Don't do it. I used to have a dualboot with Fc3 & WinXP Home. Windows xp just didn't work one day{no method works: Ctrl+Alt+Del, restarting computer, etc...}. I had to buy a new computer, but the Linux partition works fine. Now I only use that drive when I need to use Linux FC3. I use GRUB. I'm currently writing this post using Linux FC3.
