Hey people
I want to get rid of windows xp from my computer and install fedora. So, after nearly a day of downloading, I finally get the 4 installation disks, I pop in the first CD :confused: Disk boot failure:(:(. Please help guys. I am desperate to get windows out of my computer.
I read about the SHA1SUM check for the downloaded files but I cant get it to do anything. I tried running it via command prompt but to no avail.
My computer has the following spec:

AMD Sempron 64 2800+ (so I downloaded the fedora for x86_64)
256 DDR ram 266 mhz(i think)
80 gb Seagate IDE hard drive
MSI K8MM-V (or 7142) motherboard

Also I connect to the internet through an ADSL2+ modem which is connected to the computer via a USB port. Its shows up as remote NDIS device.

Please help this linux newbie

how did you try and run it from a command prompt?? if your disk won't boot then the only valid reason is gonna be that you burnt the disc wrongly...

I downloaded the sha1sum utility for windows and then I tried running it via command prompt in windows which I still have on my computer. It didnt work or atleast it doesnt give me a reasonable answer.
I burnt the CDs according to the instruction- that is as ISO images. I used nero 6 to that.
My system is not booting from the first installation disk properly and I cant perform a checksum on it. I think that is my problem right now.

well you should be able to read the cdrom under windows... can you?

Yes I can read the cdrom under windows.
I finally got sha1sum to give me a value. I ran it for the first disc, FC4-x86_64-SRPMS-disc1.iso:

e080081d2fdd7b8c74e8581ca4b42e7356145782

However, on the fedora project website http://fedora.redhat.com/download/
they dont have a sha1sum value to compare against for SRPMS disc types.

I downloaded through a torrent for fedora core 4 for x_86 64 bit PCs and all the files have an extra SRPMS compared to the ones listed on that page.
Please help.

Dog gamn it. SRPMS is not the installation ISO, right?

Then why did it take me to that torrent automatically?

My bad. I think I chose that 'source' torrent myself. I am a retard/ new to linux/ too used to mind-numbing windows.

I have fedora on my system now. I like it, even if I am not familiar with most of the functions. I am sure I'll learn them in time.
I do have a few questions for all the experienced linux users:
Is it possible for me to browse the rest of my hard drive through fedora? I have a seperate data drive, which doesnt have windows on it, that I'd really like to use with fedora.
Also, how much ram is ideal for fedora? Its lil bit slow starting up applications. I have 256 mb ddr 266mhz currently and I am looking to get more.
Also, I checked out the jargon page on fedora download site and it doesnt explain what 'dev' means. Anybody?

For all things linux I recommend the rute
guide. Although it is not Fedora specific the slackbook is a great resource.

Sorry, forgot to address your other question.

I'm running FC4 on an old PII 333mHz machine. It's maxxed out at 384Mb ram. It runs KDE sloooowwwwly, but renders everything ok. I usually ssh into it to maintain it (I use it mostly for fun/learning and as a file server) through the command line. I just installed fluxbox to see if I can have better luck running a smaller GUI than KDE or GNOME.

Of course, I always think that the more ram the better ;)
