I don't know if you can perform an upgrade with the cd's but you can upgrade FC1 to FC2 with apt-get.
Just point apt-get to the FC2 repositories and do an apt-get dist-upgrade.

I tried that but got a pretty nasty looking warning. It looks like it's actually going to remove apt! Here's the output:

From the CD, I think you have to do linux -upgrade or something at the CD's boot prompt.

My last upgrade was from RH 9 to Fedora 1 using cd's. It will ask you if your loading a new os, or upgrading. I think you first have to select your language, region and stuff. No special commands are required, just keep going thru the prompts when you boot of the cd and it will be there.
I have also done an upgrade from RH 8 to RH 9 using apt-get dist upgrade.
Don't worry about the error messages. It will upgrade most of your apps, just cause the newer version of linux distro supports different things, and they have newer versions of applications that support those newer ver of distro's.
If your reallly worried, back up your system then go for it.

I wouldn't bother. FC1 >> FC2, imho. FC2 has a lot of broken and missing things in it. Wait for FC3, maybe they'll have their act together then.

What things are you talking about?
I went from RH9 to FC2 and I didn't notice anything broken.
For every distro I install I spend some time tailoring it to my needs so that might be the reason I didn't notice anything but I've been turning all kinds of people to FC2 and none of them complained ....
I've found FC2 to be the most usable and most complete RH distro I've used to date.
Still couldn't make up my mind about which one I prefer between Libranet and FC2 though

My problems with Fedora:
1. The parted program had the CHS offset issue and refused to boot. This is a critical bug, it prevents your system from booting.
2. Nautilus (any version) refuses to run. It crashes at load. No file manager is kinda hard to deal with.
3. ALSA doesn't work without massive tweaking, patching, or recompiling.
4. Exceptionally poor performance (on an AMD64 3200+ with a gig of ram...?)
5. xfree config issues corrupted my screen on initial boot. I had selected the basic vesa framebuffer/1024x768 screen, and every other distro has been fine with that for starters.
Most are minor (except the entire file manager being broken), but still... gaps like these should be fixed. Nautilus makes it totally unusable for me so I ditched it. FC1 seemed more stable and balanced a system, and certainly shipped with fewer major issues, imho.
I loved core 1, but core 2 is buggy and a complete mess.
As for tailoring to my needs, my favorite distro is still slackware, so tailoring is not an issue. Broken software is.

Never had to use parted so I wouldn't know about that one.

KDE addict here so again I wouldn't know about a bug in Nautilus.

I currently use ALSA on an IBM laptop and have no issues.

I always used Intel only on all of my systems but are there 64-bit specific instructions in FC2?

I have FC2 installed on 2 laptops and a desktop, both laptops have an ATI chip and the desktop has an nVidia card, no extra tweaking other than installing the nVidia driver on the desktop and no problems there.
I'm sorry you ran into that many problems man, it's just that, for me, FC2 runs better out of the box than any other RH version I worked with before ...

1. It's the only partitioning software that comes with it. They took it out of the kernel in 2.6, and it's a known dual-boot issue.
2. Meh.
3. SB Live, SIS 735, and my Envy24, only the Live worked right without custom compilation, and many games still don't work, as well as apps (XMMS) without waiting for the ARTS timeout.
4. There is an AMD64 release.
5. I'm talking about an error with the basic vesa driver that prevented xfree from running.
For that matter, ctrl-alt-f1 -> f10 don't work on FC2, they disabled the virtual terminals, and using those causes GDM to crash, so I couldn't easily FIX the issue with the driver without reinstalling. No way to get to a prompt to redo the config file.
It has a lot of stupid (^) decisions in it that make it almost useless for me. Core1 worked out of the box, core2 was a waste of a DVD for me.
