Upgrade from FC3 to FC4?

Hi there,
Is it an easy process to upgrade from Fedora Core 3 to 4 when it's released?
All the information I see around is about installing fresh.

thanks!

I guess it will be about the same as upgrading from like RH9 to FC1 or from FC1 to FC2.

In basics you should update the yum and fedora-release to the newest version and afterwards perform a yum update (assuming you are using yum, but it will provide the possibility).
Some version upgrades require alteration of the packages before commencing, though. Like some obselete packages that need to be removed, or some prerequisits that need to be met before commencing...

I tend to wait a couple of days / weeks until people have figured out the clue to do the upgrade.

I came across this unfortunate post:

everything comes to he who waits

Although I installed FC4 on an older PC i have spare, I will not be updating mymain pc from FC3 to FC4 for a few months yet, let them work out all the bugs, the FC4 as it mentions is like in beta mode if u require ure pc to be running 24/7 then its not the release for u just YET..
The race to have the newest software on the first day of the release seems to me to be for windows users...
as it has been mentioned in a previuos thread, sit back, kick up your heals, grab a bear n smoke and wait till YUM the yellow dog updates for u :Pengy:

Ugh... I tried doing the yum mentod from FC2 to FC3... technically, it worked. Kinda. But in doing so, it didn't get everything up to where it should. I haven't figured out exactly what of the mess did and did not upgrade, but if I take a look at my buddies fresh FC3 install and compare it to my FC2-FC3 upgraded install, there are quite a few differences. I wouldn't have really noticed if it hadn't messed up my X stuff... including desktop. My desktop is no longer pretty but it's still functional.

I don't know what I did wrong at the time but am definitely trying to find a better way or a better distribution.

At work, I help people move between systems. Upgrades, migrations etc. And a large part of each project is planning so there is a smooth transition. We've built roadmaps and guide our customers through the process. Given Linux distro's change on such a frequent basis... we should, as a community, really put more thought into moving from a-to-b-to-c. A roadmap and upgrade is essential. Where is it for Fedora?

I'll get off my soapbox now.

I concur,

Having Fedora with it's intentions to get a new release twice a year is very noble, but a LITTLE more effort on how to migrate from the one to another wouldn't hurt . . .

In previous releases I also noticed my X environment becoming rather crippled.

This wouldn't be necessary these days, right? . . .

I hope they will be paying attention to such process in the near future?...
