Upgrade from FC 1 to more recent version

Does anyone know whether it is possible to upgrade from FC 1 to FC 2,3,or 4 via a download (i.e. not downloading and burning files to a CD/DVD, but installing from a downloaded file)? My CD Drive is broken and I don't have the money to replace it right now. I've heard this is possible with SuSe, so I was curious as to whether FC could do something similar.

Thanks

in your case I would suggest rather than updating the whole distro, just run yum update. That will update your packages to the latest for FC1, and you won't need a CD. Or you could get smart and download the iso, mount it using the loopback device, and manually run the updates. That's all the upgrade would do, but you won't get an updated release file.

Maybe your internet connections better than mine, but the download of the FC3 iso would cost me more than my CD-RW/DVD-R! Thank goodness for online stores selling them at $5.

I think I got the latest and greatest for FC 1 already. I ran the GUI version of the package downloaded (Nautilus I think it's called). If that doesn't get me everything, then I'll run yum. In terms of my connection, I have DSL so my connection speed is not bad, but I'm sure it will still take a while. Anyway, thanks.

You could download the fedora-release rpm from a Fedora Core 4 mirror, install that and then do "yum upgrade". Note, that this is not guaranteed to work perfectly.

Reddazz,

Any idea of the worst of what could happen? I'm not too worried about the hard drive it is the one I play on, so worst that could happen from my stand point is re-installing FC. I would however, like to avoid that, so if short of complete re-install how bad could using the method you described be?

Its always worked fine for me when upgrading various versions of CentOS to another and upgrading development releases of Fedora to official versions, so I don't really know what the worst case scenario would be.
