Thumbs up Successful Fedora Installation

I have just upgraded from Redhat 7.3 to Fedora Core 1 using the .iso images from the fedora site (yarrow.i386).

My PC specification is:

AMD Duron 1200
MSI K7T266 Pro2 Motherboard
Nvidia Geforce Ti4200 (128Mb) Graphics Adapter
512Mb DDR RAM (PC-2700)
10Gb Fujitsu HDD (For Fedora only), seperate drive for Windows XP
Soundblaster Live 5.1 Platinum
Motorola SB4100 Cable Modem, connected via SMC1211-TX Ethernet card
Samsung Syncmaster 753DF Monitor

To be honest, I am very impressed.

The installation had a few minor hiccups, like it freezing during the partitioning phase of the install (Manual partition using Disk Druid), upon selecting the new button it froze (twice). I found that selecting the Automatic partitioning system, then select review the changes worked, you can make the changes then.

Fedora successfully detected all but my monitor, though that was just a matter of selecting it from the list. It detected my Cable modem correctly and found my DNS, I just had to install an authentication client to complete the task (bpalogin). My cable connection was up and running in a few minutes.

After the installation sequence was complete, I restarted and all went smoothly.

The only real annoyance was using up2date the GUI based package manager, it constantly locks up while downloading the fedora updates, I believe the problem is with 'yum' which up2date uses, as the same thing happens when running 'yum' from a shell. Yum is one of the packages included in the update so I am hoping that issue will solve itself once the latest version is installed.

The GUI for the fedora package is very impressive, there is a range of wallpaper to choose from for those who don't like the standard fedora background. A good range of colours in the right areas with a simple to understand interface. GNOME, KDE and XWM are selectable from the login screen.

Fedora comes with openoffice for a office package which will more than suit most people, or I suppose you can go back to using kwrite. The email client 'Evolution' seems quite good so far, so I won't move over to Mozilla Thunderbird just yet.

Overall I would recommend Fedora Core 1 to anyone, The next release will be out soon so I am looking forward to seeing the new updates. I hope you all have as much fun and success as I did with this OS.

I'm glad you like it so far.

This is actually because the server you download from is overloaded. You can change that server that it downloads from. I have some instructions in this post:
