Question Software Installation and Update in Fedora Linux

Selam All
I am not that new to Linux ... but it has been difficult for me to manage software installation and update in Fedora Linux. Currently I am using fedora 8 and i am facing difficulties in my system software management such as :
1. My system suddenly stops receiving update, although my network is working properly.
2. When I try to install rpm packages the process terminates telling me it cant find software information
3. When i try to use the GUI based Add/Remove software application it quites telling that another programm is being running

I am in need of help ... please help me with this
Any help is appreciated!

Hi and welcome to LQ.

Do you get any specific errors when you try to update the system (try running "yum update" as root"). For your second question, how did you try to install the rpm packages?

For the error in number 3, you need to stop the yum-updatesd service first e.g.
Code:
#service yum-updatesd stop
I usually disable yum-updatesd permanently ("chkconfig yum-updatesd off" as root) and then use yumex ("yum install yumex" as root) to manage software and check for updates.

most of the suggestions worked perfectly, but the first problem is not yet solved:
the error message is that "Unable to retrive software information"
Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora. Please verify its path and try again
waiting for your help

Is your system connected to the net? Do you use a proxy server? Usually that error indicates some sort of problem with network connectivity or settings.

If using yum with a proxy, take a look at this thread.
