Post install login problem

Just installed FC4 for the first time and when I try to login (as root) I get Permission Denied: No Shell. The install process didn't ask me to create a non-root user, so root is the only pw I know. I checked /etc/passwd and there is a shell listed there (/bin/bash) so I'm not sure what I'm missing.

Thanks...

Insert a live CD (Knoppix or any other you like) and examine your install.
Make a mount point while in your live cd session (as root):
# mkdir /mnt/fedora
In this example, I am going to assume you have 3 partitions, / (hda3), /boot (hda2) and /home (hda4). If you have more, add them accordingly:
# mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/fedora
# mount /dev/hda2 /mnt/fedora/boot
# mount /dev/hda4 /mnt/fedora/home
Then chroot into your mountpoints:
# chroot /mnt/fedora /bin/bash
Check if /bin/bash exists. If not, something went horribly wrong I suspect. If it does exist, set the root passwd (just to be safe):
# passwd
You should at least be able to create a default user if you like. If sudo is installed, you might want to put your user in the sudoers file with
# visudo
Exit your chroot environment and unmount:
# exit
# unmount /mnt/fedora/home /mnt/fedora/boot /mount/fedora

If all goes well, you should be able to log on as root (or the regular user).

Tried all that and it didn't work. I'm suspecting something wrong with the mirror I used (http install) because it wouldn't let me add a user, so I'm trying to re-re-re-reinstall from a different mirror. If that doesn't work, I'll reinstall FC3 I suppose.

Thank you for responding tho!!

The install process should have asked you to create a user on your first boot. I am sure something went wrong somewhere and a reinstallation may help.
