Partitioning with Fedora Installer/Partition Magic
 

Okay, this is the situation:

I have just received (as in yesterday) an awesome new Athlon 64 3200+ gaming PC. Windows XP is fine and all, but I want to try Fedora Core 2 (the x86_64 version) to see how it runs on my new PC (I had the x86 version on my old one). I have a legal copy of PartitionMagic 8, so I installed that and told it to resize my Windows partition (c: ) so that there would be about 12 GB of free space for Linux. However, when PartitionMagic rebooted the system in order to apply the changes, it didn't do anything, but rather just went straight from "Applying Changes" to saying that it was finished. I assume that this is a problem with Partition Magic, but I'm not sure. I tried to resize the Windows partition several times to no avail.

So, unless someone knows what's going on with PM, I'd like to know if the Fedora installer can resize NTFS partitions without problems, or if there is some other way that I can do it that will work.

I think your going about it the right way, that is using PM to make your parttions, did you make three for Linux ? you need to be very carefull with fedora2 it will take your XP partition down faster thatn you can blink, there is a known bug with it that it will tell you if found Partition alignment problems, when you see that you know its gonna take you down

I had exact problem as mentionied with FC2. To get around, install FC1 first then upgrade to FC2. See my other posts.

Hi...I went through this (with a laptop)

1) DO NOT USE Fedora Core 2 to create or modify partitions. This messes up access to partition magic. Use PM to create the ext3 partitions then use disk druid to assign the mounts (don't reformat)

ALSO... use bootmagic as the bootloader. When you install grub check off the advanced install choice...then tell it not to install on the MBR...(install it on /boot). Then go back to bootmagic and have it select the partition that contains /boot

What I did to get this ...
Get rid of all partions created with Fedora Core 2 by going into rescue mode and using parted.

Then Manually create ext3 partitons using partition magic.
No SWAP Drive...re-used pagefile.sys

/boot 100 MB
/ 384 MB
/var 384 MB
/var/log 128 MB (optional)
/tmp 256 MB
/usr 4 GB
/usr/local 1 GB ( create a softlink /opt to this )
/home 1 GB

Fedora CORE 2 does not resize NTFS partions.
So if you want use both FC2 & XP use PM or any other tool to create a empty partiontion.
You don't have worry about the format.
After booting the system with FC2 Disk one, select the empty partion to install Fedora.
