NVIDIA driver installation needs kernel source file?
 

I have read the threads on this and am STILL lost. Please help me find the precompiled kernel source files necessary for kernel-2.6.20-1.2320.fc5 so that I can install my latest drivers. Thanks in advance!

If the kernel you are running is the one that was installed, then the kernel-source should be on the cd/dvd. Fire up your package manager and put kernel-source in the search box. Look for one that matches your current kernel version.

Thanks Nexus. In all honesty, I'm not sure where this kernel came from...the DVD that came with FC 5 Bible I suppose. I drift in and out of Linux....can't really remember and no longer have the disks. But I am now determined to stick with this as frustrating as it can be. So, to that end, my first question is...I boot up to kernel-smp-2.6.20-1.2320.fc5. I have just learned somewher that that kernel is really for dual processor machines, so I'm really wondering if I am even using the correct kernel since I have a Pentium 4 single processor platform. Secondly, while trying to obtain the kernel-source for my kernel, I somehow acquired another kernel accidently because when I type rpm -qa | grep kernel, not only does the above kernel come up, but so does a non smp kernel kernel-2.6.20-1.2320.fc5. This one does not come up as an option to boot to during boot though. I'm thinking I should use it since it appears to be more suited for my platform. Any ideas for this drowning newbie?

It most certainly would be better if you used a kernel more suited to your system.

However as I am not a Fedora user, I would suggest you wait for better assistance from another Fedora user. I would hate to ill advise you and render your system unstable. I'm sure there's a way to add your kernel source from the commandline.

Even though you no longer have the installation dvd, you can still use Yum to add or remove packages. You may only need to update the /etc/yum.conf file with the location of an online source for Fedora packages. It may be that it is no longer called the kernel-source, it could now be called kernel-devel in which case the one for your current kernel can be found here: http://fancy.se/fc5updates-repoview/...t__.group.html
