Need help to install fedora 9 using USB flash drive
 

Hi,
I am new to linux world and would like to install Fedora 9. Presently am having Win xp on my laptop.
I downloaded the fc9 dvd iso and burnt the DVD. However my dvd drive is not functioning properly.
So I want install using a flash drive. I have an 8 GB flash drive. I want to copy the downloaded fc9 dvd iso to my flash drive and do the installation from my flash drive. How can I do that ?

if you can boot it, there is installation to hardrive icon on the desktop, just follow it.

There's a possible solution that I have successfully tried on my Intel C2D machine. I used the Live USB Creator released on fedorahosted.org to create a LiveOS image on my USB flash drive (1GB) that happens to be a memory card of my Moto RAZR V3m by taking the iso image of the i386 version of FC9's live cd. It enabled me to copy the live OS on my USB drive and boot my machine using the same.

Since a LiveCD has got a single static user, it wont take you through the settings stuff and directly boot up in that user. You'll then be able to see an option "Install to hard drive" on the desktop that shall fire up the installation process once the LiveOS has finished copying its install image to the hard drive. Installation shall begin after you are prompted to reboot your machine normally.

One tweak that you need to perform before using the flash drive and after the LiveOS has been installed to your hard drive is that you need to edit the syslinux.cfg file (created on your flash drive after running the LiveUSB Creator). There was a tiny bug in the version I used. It could not find the root device from where it's supposed to fetch the OS.

You need to edit a line that holds the grub options in syslinux.cfg
root=LABEL=FEDORA parameter to root=/dev/sdb1 .This shall start the LiveOS (might take some time depending upon the USB version you're using).

Another option that you might try is to configure your windows box so that it enables you to start an installation procedure upon reboot. You may then choose your USB drive in the install source options once installation starts.

P.S.: The installation sources shall have your USB drive in them only if you have a BIOS support for USB drive detection. Also, in order to access the iso image on the USB drive, you need to have it formatted with FAT32 filesystem as Fedora installer is unable to recognise other filesystems like NTFS.
