Mouse pointer missing
I have installed FC5 onto my Pc -motherboard=ASUs A8N-VM, CPU=AMD64 3500+ when it boots up there is a mouse pointer until the insert username, password screen appears, then no mouse pointer.Once up and running there is still no mouse pointer, using the keyboard I have managed to activate the "sonar" to locate the pointer by pressing Ctrl. This works in locating the pointer's location and if I left click the mouse I can see a tiny pinprick of light that is the tip of the pointer. I have tried 3 different mice with 3 reinstalls but get the same every time. I borrowed another copy of the FC5 DVD and installed using that and got the same result. Help please, I want a mouse pointer.

I've got the exact same problem. Same mainboard, same CPU, but no mouse pointer. As far as I understand what I read about the problem, it is due to some incompatibility between the on-Board nVidia graphic chip and the X-Window-System. As I am dumb and new to Linux (actually, Fedora is my thirty-something-th try of a Linux distribution and the first one not crashing during installation), I'd really apreaciate someone explaining a fix for the mouse pointer problem for a :newbie: like me.
Thanks in advance! |
Hi kokstitan I found https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla....cgi?id=182517 go to article 20 and edit xorg.conf as it suggests -worked for me.
I found that I could navigate somewhat erratically by watching where the non existent mouse pointer highlighted icons etc and to get to xorg.conf I opened Home then File Open parent , then File Open parent . I then scrolled through the files until I found /etc opened it and searched for X11, opened it and searched it for xorg.conf, opened it and edited it as described in the above url I am sorry if my explanation is a bit long winded or basic but it's the way I wish some one had explained it to me and saved me hours finding out how to do it. (I am new to Linux and Forums but promise to improve) |

Yeah, I got my cursor! Just added "Option "HWCursor" "Off"" to xorg.conf.
But - now my mouse crashes after some minutes and won't react anymore. I can't establish a Network Connection (anymore, because it did work once). So, I won't get bored with my Fedora Core 5. Nevertheless, mouse pointer is back on screen and that's what this thread was about. :) Yibbie! :D |
Just a little update on the neverending Linux vs. Me - Case. :)
I won! After some months of ignoring Linux, I ran into the Blag Distro which is based on FC5 but both smaller and equipped with proprietary drivers, such as for the nVidia chipset and mp3. I had the same problem with the mouse not working anymore after some time - only this time, I plugged it into the PS/2-Port using a simple Adapter (it's a USB mouse) and all mouse problems were gone. :-) Just working out of the box. I can't believe it... |
