Monitor install problems

I am having touble installing a monitor in Fedora.

The install went great except it can't identify my monitor (PACOM, 15 inch model 4fe, mfg in 1995). No matter what I select, even the generic 640x480 results in unsynced scanning after I boot. I know that the monitor works because the entire installation process works with it and the graphical boot inteface works. I hate to keep shutting it off and trying to upgrade the monitor because... well, it just sucks.

Any ideas how to get this working short of buying a new monitor?

well gather the specs for the monitor (horizontal / vertical frequencies)
and then boot to command line and type
xf86config
and when you get to the monitor questioning manually specify the hardware specs for it .

I have no documentation on the monitor. I've tried the standard VGA settings of 31.5 and 60 which should work for anything -- and I know this monitor works in VGA Windows. What sync rates is Fedora using in the graphical installation program? -- because that works great -- it's after I boot that it doesn't work.

Problem solved. $49 (after the $40 rebate) secured a 17 inch refurbished IBM monitor at the local [Insert Chain Computer Store Name Here]. This monitor, manufactured in the 21st century, worked immediatly. The only permanent scars I carry from the experience is the knowlege that I wasted an evening over a crappy monitor. Thanks for the quick response, though. I appreciate it.
