modem onboard soft v92 gigabyte PE1000 (Gigabyte motherboard not Linux-friendly?)
I used FC 2 installed, but still no modem detected. I used to use XP and when I installed XP, the XP require a software called Intel Chipset Software installation Utility. and I asked Intel if they have a linux version of that driver. I enclosed below their answer (as well as my question and hardware configuration as I reported to them).
Could you please have a comment and suggestion on what to do to make the modem work.... THANKS Here is my question/Hardware configuration: Email: david_fadjar@yahoo.co.uk Customer_type: End User Product: Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility Product_id: 816 OS: Linux* Survey_opt_in: No Chipset: intel 865PE Motherboard: Gigabyte, Bios_version: f7d (version 7d, Award Bios iPE) Processor_type_and_speed: Pentium IV 2.8Mhz System_manufacturer: IBM* Motherboard: Gigabyte, RAM: 512 MB OS_upgrade: upgrade Previous_version: windows xp Non_English_version: IDE_driver: yes INF_driver: yes Device_manager_info: Computer Disk drives Display adapters Dvd/CDrom Floppy disk controllers Floppu disk drives IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers IEEE 1394 bus host controllers Texas instrument OHCI compliant IEEE 1394 Keyboards Mice and other pointing devices Modems Soft92V Data fax modem Monitors Network adapters 1394 net adapter Intel pro 100 VE Network connection Ports (COM and LPT) Processors Sound video and game controllers System devices ACPI fixed feature button Direct memory access controller Intel 8280 IEB LPC interface controller Intel 8280 IEB PCI bridge Intel 8280 SMBus controller Intel 8280 Firmware hub device Intel 82865G/PE processor to AGP controller Intel 82665G\PE\P processor to I/O controller Universal serial bus controllers Intel 8280 IEB USB universal host controller (24d2,24d4,24d7,24de) Devices: 2 hard disk, maxtor 80 GB (one as primary, one as secondary). CD rom liteon, Problem_started: LINUX Installation process, modem not detected. Used Suse Pro 9.1 and Fedora Core 2. Both cannot detect internal modem. Issue: Installation using windows xp have similar problem, but the problem fixed using Intel Chipset Software installation utility version 5.0.1.1015. Do you have the software with similar function to be used in LINUX? I received a file e1000-4.4.12.tar to solve the problem. Is it the right patch/replacement to the Chipset software installation utility above? I tried to install the tar file above, but when I proceed to the 'make install' command as directed, the computer said no such bash command exist. Is that a defect in the tar file, or a defect in both Suse and FC2 program? Could you please help with a solution? I have had this problem for months already, but to no solution. INTEL's answer to that is as follows Thank you for contacting Intel(R) Technical Support. The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility was developed for updating Windows* Operating Systems with the Plug and Play feature on Intel(R) chipsets. The Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility is not required or compatible with Operating Systems without the Plug and Play feature, such as Windows* NT* 4.0 or Linux*. Please contact your Linux* vendor for additional information and troubleshooting assistance. ----------------------------------------------- So as you can see, Linux do no that any PnP feature and maybe needs a different driver to recognise the internal modem. Anybody have comment or explanation for this event. I would think onboard modem should usually easily recognised because it is in the motherboard. Unable to recognise motherboard is a little too sad. Thanks for the comment and explanation. I am a newbie here... so I really do not know much about installing or linux. Thanks David |
