Thank you for your replies I changed the user password as suggested but still unable to log in,created a new user(johnh) and was able log in to a new home folder with non of my settings.

"None of your settings"?? Does this imply that you performed an upgrade/did not format your /home partition? What desktop GUI are you using? Because going from one version of Plasma (KDE) or Gnome to another can often cause this to happen, as could a bad .Xauthority file. Log in as root, and delete any .Xauthority stuff you can see. Past that, you can remove any .kde directories in your home folder, and log in. You'll have to set your desktop up again, but that's the price to pay for admission.
