Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

here is the error I'm getting I can get more info on my system if need be, I have 1 gig of ram that is working perfectly fine, my hard drive is good, its just not installing fedora....

You can try booting with:

noapic

and see if the apic chip is buggy, or your bios is being buggy with it ... there are a few other apic boot options such as apic=debug

You would interrupt the boot process at the GrUB splash screen by pressing enter
Arrow down to the line starting with kernel
Hit the "a" key to append
place a single space then add: noapic
then boot into it -- can't remember if you hit enter, then b, or "e" then "b" for that

good luck

I followed the instructions given to use the noapic option to no avail. I am able to boot into Fedora 7 but when I attempt to boot into Fedora 7 XEN, that is when I have this issue.

so I tried the noapic trick by hitting esc then f4 for kernel then typing linux noapic and it gives me new errors
EIP: [<c041c782>] kmap_automatic+0x2e/0x91 SS:ESP 0068:dfa0aef0
then kernel panic again

Brad.Scalio@noaa.gov 07-03-2007 05:14 AM

Greetings

Have you ever had memory issues on this machine?

Can you paste the last 50 or so lines right before the kernel panic please?

i had the same problem in fc-6 but i installed by typing 'garbage' and it will give a msg kernel module garbage not found again hit enter and your installation will proceed without any problem. hope it will work on f-7 too.

I am confused by the last posting with respect to "garbage" at install. I have already installed FC7 and have, daily, grabbed and installed the latest package updates.

I do not know where "garbage" fits in at install?

Adimelo 07-06-2007 07:25 PM

Yeah I tried doing the garbage thing, and the noapic thing, not having any problems with my memory, rand memtest84 through the install, and a coupple of ram tests and a coupple of chip tests, ect. ect. ect. can only get about the prev 24 lines of information its driving me nuts.....
