Installing Fedora 8 on VMWware 1.0.4 error. pening dev/....

Installing Fedora 8 on VMWare 1.0.4 error opening /dev/....

Hello
Host system Windows XP pro Sp3
Vmware server 1.0.4

I was trying to install Fedora 8 on VMware server 1.0.4 but this is what I ran into:

1- I chose Linux Red Hat as there was not Fedora 8 as option when making a partition in Vmware (hope that's ok)
2- the DVD image was tested and it passed
3- It took a little bit to have drivers loaded but finaly I got to the setup GUI

4. I got this message: "The partition table on device sda was unreadable. To create new partitions it must be initialised ,causing the loss of all data on this drive
This operation will override any previuos installation choices about which drives to ignore
Would you like to initialize this drive, erasing all DATA?

No Yes

4- I assumed that its the virtual hard disk file that is going to be erased and fixed in this case so I click Yes

5- Accepting this option resulted in another error message saying:

"Error opening /dev/sdaa: No such device or address
Retry Cancel

Retry is giving no results while Cancel changes the device choice in the same last error message from /dev/sdaa to /dev/sdar , sdat , etc

Need some expert advice..

Thank you!!

Most add I tried this both gui and text mode and i got the same result.

Try reinstalling the OS as a general linux distro with kernel 2.6. Does vmware support 64 bit OS's? I use parallels and I have a use 32bit versions for it to work. So look out for both those points

Hi PhenuxRizing. I just wanted to post an update.. I kept cancelling at every error.. for device or address not found and then after I got into the final device or adds not found the installation process kept on going pretty normal. after the requested rebooting I got lines that read like this during the booting process:

sd 2:0:2:5 [sdw] asking for cache data failed
sd 2:0:2:5 [sdw] assuming drive cache: write through
sd 2:0:2:6 [sdw] rejecting I/O to offline device
sd 2:0:2:6 [sdw] rejecting I/O to offline device
sd 2:0:2:6 [sdw] rejecting I/O to offline device
sd 2:0:2:6 [sdw] rejecting I/O to offline device
sd 2:0:2:6 [sdw] rejecting I/O to offline device

then the content in [..] would change to sdx, sdy, sdz, etc.

then after a while it would boot fine... and so far the only thing I found not working is sound (which doesnt surprise me) and that I don't have access to cd room drive (the same one used to load the OS)
but. still seems like my fedora 8 is working, not perfect but working under vmware 1.0.4

about your questions:

vmware does support 64 bit os, I'm guessing that as a host and as a guest

I was going for the linux red hat distro while setting up the disk space on vmware because it worked nicely when I did the same installation on my school computer. (also windows xp pro Host, although now that I remember: I installed fedora 7 and not 8)

anyways for testing and just to taste the linux power on vmware I think my fedora 8 installation will be just fine., would be cool to know exactly what is happening during my booting though. will try to search for it later.

Thanks!
