Installing Fedora 14 on Macbook Pro 7,1
 

Below are two posts from a fedora forum. You can see the original forum here. Otherwise you can just look at the two posts of mine I've chosen to put here.

It was recommended to me to continue installation with the basic video driver, which has the anaconda installer show up properly. I did this, but fedora refuses to boot.

Here's how things are:

I use rEFIt so that I can choose to boot up between Mac and Linux (in case the linux distro I use does not recognize the Mac OS). When I used Ubuntu, there were only two options in rEFIt, one for mac, and one for linux. After I installed Fedora 14 with basic video driver there were now 3 options, one for mac, and TWO for linux. After updating the partition manager of rEFIt (a necessary step for it to recognize new partitions), each of the two linux options gives me the message: "error: unknown filesystem". And then on the line below it there's a prompt that says: "grub rescue>"

Any ideas about that anyone?

"Well, I've tried the Fedora 14 64-bit DVD, the 64-bit CD, the 32-bit CD and all of their normal video driver installers all gave me the same graphical problems (The DVD anaconda installer had no text shown, and the live CDs had no desktop icons and the GNOME bars were blank. I assumed these were the same problem).

The basic video driver installers showed up properly and installed properly. However, when trying to boot up, they all said the same thing:
"error: unknown filesystem
grub rescue> "

I don't know anything else to try.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and I even took the time to write out each keystroke needed to install the 64-bit DVD I had using the basic video driver installer, and then I used those keystrokes to maneuver through the regular video driver installer on the DVD. While I made it through the installer no problem, it still didn't work."


I wouldn't be posting here too, but I would like this to get fixed as soon as possible, and I didn't see this problem getting fixed very quickly, if at all, on the original forum I used.

Okay, I got it to work finally. I cannot say for certain, but it seems like the problem was that I was installing fedora OVER my prior Ubuntu installation. There must have been some bit of Ubuntu still lingering and rEFIt was not able to handle it.

After installing Mac OS X over the entire drive again (thereby getting rid of whatever lingering Ubuntu stuff was still there), and then partitioning free space for Fedora, it worked like a charm. I did nothing different in the installation, it was just that Ubuntu hadn't been installed previously.
