Install windows over Fedora Core 3

Please Help Me!?

I installed Fedora Core 3 over a PXE connection. I was experimenting a lot and I didn't like how much i had messed around with it. So thinking i had a handle on Fedora, I decided to wipe the hd and reinstall Fedora. For some reason, as it was installing it lost its connection to the server. So that install was hosed. I was thinking I wanted to dual boot WinXP and Fedora.

Here is the problem now. After that hosed install, I can't install anything. I put in the WinXP disk and now it won't boot from a CD. It skips over it and goes to a grub> prompt. After reading some of the other posts and was able to play around with the grub commands and find my root partition (hd0,1), but i get the error "Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x8e"

I also tried installing some of the other linux distros i have disks of. Such as Suse, Mandrake, Slackware and even tried Red Hat 8. There is no booting from the cd\dvd combo drive.

I tried using a windows boot floppy and it wont detect the floppy drive. I looked around and played with the bios settings, turning on and off device security, changing the boot order, nothing works.

Oh I'm terribly sorry, this is a Compaq armada m700 notebook computer. I neglected to mention that earlier.

I really want to get XP back on so i can use photoshop and Dreamweaver and Flash for my web development. I know there are linux alternatives but I have used these for a long time and I'm partial to them. Yet i want to dual boot with linux since I am becoming more and more of a serious linux user.

Please if anyone has any ideas on what i can do. Or any questions you need me to still answer to help you help me. Please. I would be very grateful.

Yes i did. The cd\dvd is actually a swappable drive. I have a cd\dvd and a floppy drive that i can swap out. Yet its not hot-swappable when I'm in the the bios and boot screens.

So i actually dont choose to boot from cd-rom. I chose media drive and it has worked before, included for this install of Fedora. Fedora PXE cd is the only thing i can get to boot from a disk.

Would installing by PXE give fedora the ability to flash my bios? or is that not an issue if i can boot Fedora PXE disk?

Thanks

If your bios was flashed, you wouldn't be able to switch on the computer

fishbulb,

Well, I can think of a crazy solution. Remove your hard disk ,connect it as a slave to someother system. Now use some partitioning software like Partition magic or if the master system has windows XP, you can use the local disk managment to repartition your hard disk and create new partition table.

Hope this helps..!

I totally thought about doing that Intercodes. Except this is a laptop. I wish I had another laptop hd (2 1/2") to try swapping it out with. Unfortunately, I don't.
