I have downloaded and attempted to install fedora 8 for 64-bit x86 from three different sites (including fedora). All three ISO files are identical size, so presumably they are identical.
In GUI install mode, it just reports an error with no elaboration and lets me click "ok" - to retry presumably, because after another minute or so, it displays the identical uninformative error.
In text install mode, I select the obvious choices (nothing tricky), and accept the default partitioning. Sadly, it did not let me keep my existing fedora-4 for x86_64 partitions for some reason, but hey, they're definitely gone now! This time it seemed to get to the point of installing, and told me "this may take a few minutes". So I went away to do something else, but when I came back I found my display with a white background and full of some kind of trace reporting text that ends like this (hopefully this is enough):
Now what? My system was working fine with fedora-4 x86_64, so the chances the hardware magically went bad is tiny. Here is a summary of my hardware:
DFI LanParty nF4 SLI-DR (part-number NF4S91-200)
installed DDR SDRAM = 2GB (2 x 1GB 240-pin modules)
AMD Athlon64 4400+ x2 (dual core) CPU
no clocks or other speed-ups applied
memory test just run to verify RAM
XFX 8600GT 512MB video ram (nvidia video chip)
1920x1200 24" LCD monitor (dell 2405FPW)
one hitachi 160GB SATA2 hard disk drive (HDT722525DLA380)
one PCI parallel-port + 2 serial-port card
no other cards installed - just nvidia video card and the parallel/serial port card
plenty-big power supply (750W)
PS: This is one of two identical systems that I built 2~3 years ago. When I swap the hard-disks from my other (winxp64) system, this computer boots up fine.
Have you tried a minimalist install where you have no desktop or server packages being installed. I find that if those packages aren't installed or if just the default packages are chosen then Fedora 8 will install. Good luck.
