win XP home on first drive "C", second drive partitioned fat 32, five partitions, 512MB RAM, Dell Dimension L433 celeron, when i run the instalation CD, no matter what I try to do to alter the install process, ie noprobe, the same exact thing happens, the checks of the system are made and the install hangs up in the same exact place.
initializing RT Netlinksocket
APM: Bios version 1.2 Flags 0X03 driver version 1.2
and the blinking cursor stuck, nothing to do but restart.
I look at all of the options listed under F1, F2, F3, F4. F5, try everything, the result is always the same. no matter what i type at the boot: prompt, if it doesn't say linux first, it is not found in the kernal, if I type linux and anything else and enter, it always does the same checks and hangs up in the same exact place.
I am very new to linux, obviously, and would appreciate any direction to effect a change, and possibly install fedora.
thanks in advance!
migo
found that the hangup occurs at the point of the installer creating a RAM disk.
downloaded a new copy of disk 1 iso, no change.
i will get a more commercially produced distro of fedora and try again.
well, i tried another version of core 1.
same exact problem.
since it hangs at the time of creating a RAM disk, does it necessarily follow that there is a hardware issue, such as with the RAM itself?
it no longer appears to me to be software related, other than that the installer is unable to proceed with the installation.
I am desperate for help with this.
i had fedora C1 for a while and had no prob's with it
have u tried a custom partition & install on your 2nd HDD
move every thing off of the drive and set it up something like this
hda1 = 512 MB swap
hda2 = 5GB /
hda3 = rest /home
set the install to format ext3 or reiserFS for the / & /home partitons
and let the linux boot manager take control of the MBR, it will duel boot with XP
i have cleared off the second drive and partitioed it using Seatools [drive mfr].
the options were NTFS, fat 32 and I believe Fat 16.
i partitioned the drive as fat32, four partitions.
i thought that fedora installer would be the one to actually partition the drive in the format it needs, with me just telling it what size...
i never get to that point of interaction.
the installer hangs up at the same point every single time i try to run it. the only thing that i can do from the installer is to do the memory check [checks ok, takes over two hours].
but every other option i choose at the fedora initial screen takes me to the exact same place in the install sequence, and there is nothing for me to do, except shut down.
thanks for the help, steve, maybe i am missing something.
i will keep trying.
