Fedora with XFCE on old laptop
 

Hello,

I would like to install Fedora on an old laptop.

I have seen on Fedora website that the minimal requirements are PC Compatible Intel 64 bits and 1 Gb memory (RAM). And the laptop is 32 bits and only 500 Mb of memory.

As XFCE is design to be lightweight, I was wondering if these requirements also apply for XFCE?
Have some of you been able to have a working Fedora with XFCE with a lower configuration?
Or maybe you know a distribution in the Red Hat family that can work with a smaller configuration?

just how old is this laptop ?
fedora is VERY Gnome centric even with xfce or lxde or e17 or KDE4 some of Gnome will be installed

"The Gimp" will need some of gnome installed
and any other gtk ui program will also

1 gig ram as the BARE MIN.
fedora will "run"
but it really depends on how you define that

i use Mozilla seamonkey and it uses a bit more ram then Firefox ( a little bit more )
as i type seamonkey is using 260 meg ram
and kde on opensuse is using a total of 2.1 gig ram as i type

If possible I'd be sure to select the 32 bit version for both.

I do not have the laptop here with me but I know it's quite old. So I will forget fedora for it.

500mb of RAM is quite low these days. The biggest problem is going to be some programs, like Firefox, which can use a considerable amount of RAM. If you can boost your RAM to atleast 1gb if not 2gb then things should be better.

Don't write off Fedora. I have an old single core desktop that is currently running Fedora fine. I have had several different distros on it and they all perform about the same. It is more important how you have it set up.

I started off by installing the LXDE spin. LXDE's main goal is to be lightweight. XFCE is certainly lighter than Gnome and KDE, but I think LXDE is lighter. LXDE is not as full featured as XFCE though. LXDE runs ok on my desktop, however I get the best performance by using Fluxbox along with LXDE's lightweight programs.
