Question Fedora install problem - blank screen

I just installed Fedora Core 1, but when I rebooted following the installation, I just end up at a blank screen. Any ideas about what the problem is?

Just a side note to this. I've also been trying to install Mandrake 10 Community Edition and I've been having problems with the x server when doing this. Is this a related issue?

Post your configuration (Monitor, Graphic card, Computer specs...)

Try booting from CD 1 of Fedora installation. linux rescue is the mode you want to use and tell me if that gets you anywhere. It should boot to the command line. Then also post here your XF86Config file which you will find at /etc/X11/

Peace!

I'm using an old IBM G41 monitor (it's detected as G40, all OS's find it like this, not a problem), Diamond Viper 770 32mb, P3 500 MHz, 256mb ram, 20gb hard drive.

I'll try booting off of CD 1 now and post what results I get from this.

OK, I booted off the first installation CD and went into rescue mode, but there was no X11 directory inside of the /etc directory?? What's going on with that?

oh sorry.

(say yes to when you are prompted if you want to mount your current fedora installation)
if you read the instructions on the screen, you would ... find it.

once you boot in, type chroot /mnt/sysimage

Then go to /etc/X11 and you should find the file XF86Config there.

In that file see, what the Sections Monitor and Screen say.

There you can adjust the horizontal and vertical refresh rate and screen resolution. Make it low enough or better yet, make it the way it is described in your monitors user manual (or search the web for specs on horizontal and vertical refreshrate and max resolution) adjust that to what it has to be and reboot to linux. It should be alive and running. if not post here again.

Ok, I looked around online and compared the horizontal and vertical synch rates to the preset ones in the XF86Config file and I made the needed changes. I rebooted, and the gui came up for a second and then went off the screen and I was left with a text based screen where everything is initialized and then it says ok to it. What's strange is I have a white rectangular cursor that I can control with the mouse??? So what's going on now?

You get to the command line?

If so, just type: startx

Post here if that gets you some errors.

It's not the command line. I can't type anything at this point. It's very strange. It's like it's going to start up with a gui running, and then it goes away, but yet I still have the ability to move the cursor with the mouse, which I had never been able to do before.

Hehe, glad to be in linux ha? (the sort you are in anyway)

Try CTRL + ALT + F1.

That should get you to a command line. If so, login as root. and startx

I actually ended up clearing off the installation and then reinstalling. This time I just booted off the first cd on the initial reboot and changed the synch rates for the monitor. When I then rebooted without the disk, everything worked fine and it went right into Fedora. Thanks for the help.

I am having a similar situation. Did you initially install in text or GUI mode? And how did you change your synch rates on your initial reboot? Thanks.

I installed in GUI moade. I don't quite remember how I did it because I switched over to Mandrake right after I finally got Fedora to work, but I believe there's a configuration you can run for your video. You need to choose a custom monitor and then the synch rates are one of the variables you can change for it.
