Fedora Core 5 - VMware partition error message
I have a Dell Inspiron 9100 which is configured to dual boot between
XP and FC 4. I've installed the trial version of vmware workstation and I'm trying to install FC 5 via vmware. I've created the virtual disk and everything goes ok until I get a message saying: " The partition table on device sda was unreadable. To create new partitions, it must be initialised causing the loss of ALL datat on this drive. This operation will overrride any previous choices about which drives to ignore. Would you like to initialize this drive erasing ALL DATA " At this point, I aborted the install. If I said yes, would I completely wipe out everything on my hard drive ? If this is the case is there a way around installing FC 5 via vmware on XP without wiping out my hard drive ? Thanx. |
why run a vmware workstation trial when vmware server is free?
anyway... when you set up the vm you told it to create a new hard disk right? and you said make it however big and put it in this file... remember that? that's what it's trying to format as a device. the vm thinks it has a real disk, (i hope) you know otherwise. your data is perfectly safe. |
Workstation just seemed the
right place to start for me, I will get around to downloading vmware server. I just needed confirmation / assurance that I was'nt wiping any other data. Thanks for the reply & information |
I have found that vmware just does not work with any newer distro of linux. I could get 3 to install and work fine but with 5 it would try to install but during the install it would throw a ton of driver errors and bomb out.

any? well that's just not true...

For what it's worth, I've managed to install FC 5 without the install process bombing out.
The only issue I have now is in trying to get to the internet. ifconfig shows that eth0 is configured with the correct ip address, correc gateway & correct subnet mask. Yet when I try & ping the dns server it comes back with destination unreachable. |
can you ping the default gateway? what about a traceroute to the dns server?

Thanks for the response.
