Fedora Core 4 Realtek 8139 Performance Issue

I installed FC4 on a Compaq SR1750NX and everything went well but I notice network performance degridation from Windows XP. I investigated this and found that the ping times to the router were running from 1ms to 1500 ms and mostly 500-1500 ms!!

XP was always < 1ms.

The performance is almost unnoticeable for browsing, it just feels a bit slower (and of course it is) but if I do some major downloads and updates (required by the age of the current FC4 iso's) it's very slow.

It appears the data coming in from the net is being buffered and released in chunks, so I get several ping responses in a group from the card.

If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this please send me mail at umina@theuminas.com if you can.

I have a number of machines back in CA that use realtek cards, and now I'm going to run some tests on them. Here in MA I have nothing connected as this is a very small installation, so the problem was quickly isolated.

Are you current on maintenance (as root: yum -y update). There have been many fixes for this driver.
