Fedora 8 installation on an IBM Xseries server

I am trying to install Fedora Core 8 on an ibm Xseries model 330 server with dual PIII processors, 512MB memory and a 146GB scsi drive. Using an external DVD drive attached to the server, I successfully start the installation, typical questions about keyboard type, etc. when the installation gets to the part where it should be asking about partitioning options, I get the dvd drive drawer comes open and a "please insert the Fedora Core disk and try again" message. Reinserting the fedora disk results in some disk activity, but will return to the previous message. This disk passes the media check and has successfully installed on an ibm intellistation computer, so I believe the media to be good.
For an additional test, I have an older copy of RH7.2 on two CD's that exhibit the identical behaviour using the built in cd drive.
Just for test purposes, I inserted an old copy of WIN98 SE and it does not even recognize the disk at all.
I have the bios set for booting from the cdrom/dvdrom as first boot device. I have no hardware malfunctions that the ibm utility can detect. I did notice that a bank of 8 dip switches are on the motherboard that I have no idea what they are for.
Any help would be appreciated.
