Red face fedora 5 installation problem in SATA harddisks

hi
I'm a newbee to linux installation....
i bought a laptop(HCL-Indian brand)with Hitachi SATA harddisk 120GB,and tried loading fedora 5...
first i got error
"AN ERROR HAS OCCURED - NO VALID DEVICES WERE FOUND ON WHICH TO CREATE NEW FILESYSTEMS. PLEASE CHECK YOUR HARDWARE FOR THE CAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM."
then i used this command to detect harddisk
linux all-generic-ide noapic nolapic
(I got this from some forum)
thn my harddisk got detected and i was able to install FC5..
but when i tried to boot it....
i got this error...
Mount: error No such device or address mounting /dev/root on /sysroot as ext3
Setuproot: moving /dev failed: No such file or directory
Setuproot: error mounting /proc: No such file or directory
Setuproot: error mounting /sys: No such file or directory
Switchroot: mount failed: No such file or directory
Kernel panic – not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

How do i solve this problem....

I had this problem with FC5 once and it turned to be a SATA setting in the BIOS - can't remember exactly what SATA option it was but if it is your problem it should'nt take long to figure out.

Hope this helps

Add 'all-generic-ide' at the end of the kernel line in /boot/grub/grub.conf

When you get the boot menu screen, highlight the 'Fedora' option, hit 'e', highlight the kernel line, hit 'e' again and type '1' at the end, press 'enter' and 'b' to boot into single user(root) mode. From here use 'vi' to edit /boot/grub/grub.conf

Not a road warrior fundi but the following from Thinkwiki might assist?

RHEL3.0 Update 7 will install on a T60p, but you need to make an adjustment. Both uni-processor and SMP kernels get installed, with the SMP kerrnel the default. However, the SMP kernel can't seem to find the disk drive. You can work around this by use "e" at the GRUB kernel prompt, then on the "kernel" line appending " noapic". After the system boots, you'll want to edit /boot/grub/grub.conf to add the " noapic" option to the kernel line as well.
